I am starting to introduce myself to the major system and don’t know whether I should start directly with single digits or double digits. Should I start by creating images for 0, 1, 2…etc with just one sound (in my case the “P” for Pee, “T” for eaT, “N” for Anna…etc as I am using Yanjaas system) or 01, 02, 03…ie. “P-T " for Pot, “P-N” for Pen, 'P-M” poem…etc.
I would assume that I needed to start with single digits first, but I thought I would just check. My personal challenge is to learn 0-99 so in the long run it would mean that I would eventually have to learn 110 images instead of 100.
@Rdb, learning the basics the right way is a very good step towards an excellent memory. I agree with you about starting with single digits. I think the conversion system works best as an incremental system where knowing the one-digit keywords help you build two-digit keywords sometimes. Good luck on your two-digit keywords!
A one digit system is about as useful as memorizing your grocery list. Now, for some people that’s all they wanna do, but since you’re already talking about a 00-99 system, just do that instead. Think about when you first learned how to read and write and then compare that to your first foreign language… you didn’t again start by writing every single letter individually, did you.
100 images is enough… there is no need for single digit images is you’re using a two digit system already. The logical next step from there is a 3-digit system and then you can use your image for ‘1’ for 111 and your image for ‘2’ for 222, etc.
Who knows? But I have to start somewhere and each system seems to have it´s own pros and cons.
Is there a system for everything or do we have to learn 2,3,4 different systems to accomodate our topics? For instance, I want to remember birthdays and historical dates - so for this format (dd-mm-yy) the 00-99 system is fine. But what interests me too, are bank numbers, credit cards, Passport numbers etc. They have an uncertain number of digits mixed with letters.
Depends on what you mean by “everything” but the answer is probably no. Besides, the major system is just a translation system… memory palaces will do the heavy lifting for you. As far as your numbers with odd number of digits, prepend zeros.
0100 or 000100 are as much a “one hundred” as 100 is; however, you can’t append a zero to it because that changes the value to “one thousand” which is different from 100.

I don’t have Major System and I am working on PAO now. It’s surprisingly exhausting and time-consuming task. I am still working on my 00-99, and I wasn’t planning to create 0-9 at first. But I ran into problems with remembering numbers like nn-nn, or just n, or nn-nn-nn-n, or nn-nn-nn-nn-n. All cases where it can’t be divided into 3 double digits numbers. So, I created PAO for 0-9, and now I can deal with “nn-nn”, - I just brake it into “nn-n-n”. And “nn-nn-nn-nn-n” transforms into “[nn-nn-nn]-[n-n-n]”.
For n and nn-nn-nn-n I am using sometimes a stoppage object, pink sugary goo.
I am still experimenting with all that, so take my advice with a grain of salt, but I would say, go for it, create 0-9 too. That’s just ten more images for major system. You can just create ten images arbitrarily, “on the basis of random choice or personal whim, rather than any reason or system”.
I am really glad that I created 0-9, that’s a lot of fun. My pin code is now Donald Trump flying out of the manhole on a Russian doll to the sky. And it’s only four numbers, I would need to use 6 numbers for 00-99 PAO. Now I can create 6 numbers out of 4 numbers.
I regret a bit that I didn’t start with Major System and started with PAO. Creating PAO is not easy and I am afraid that I can just give up at some point. But even if I give up, I have now my 0-9 PAO, and it works nicely for 1 day already.
I agree. I built my 01-99 but ran into the same problem described above. So i added 0-9 using the ‘sounds like’ technique. Eg, zero = hero, one = sun, two = shoe. Combined with my 00-99 system It’s been really helpful for memorising membership numbers.
I would say that it depends on what you are wanting to use it for. I find the individual digits helpful for numbering things in my mind, and for anything else that I need to apply a single digit to. I find the digit pairs beginning with 0 (01, 02, 03) useful when I’m trying to memorize a longer number and the pair I’m looking at starts with a zero…
In most cases (lists etc.) I always use two digits 00, 01, 02 etc. (my assumption being that the list is likely to be (or grow to) over 10 items). I personally use the Rhyming Letter Getters to encode the numbers into letters and go from there.
But occasionally I will use ‘Number Shapes’ for odd digit numbers (eg: 101,102 - where I would use my cast member for 10 and add the number shape to the scene to get 101).
For simple short lists (under 10) I go back to the peg rhyming system I learnt as a kid.
