How could one make a journey (it could be split into a group of smaller journeys) that totals 40,000-50,000 loci?
I was wondering if anyone has any ideas?

That’s a lot of loci!
You might want to reconsider your method.
I’d use a city or town. I converted the small town I live in to about 15,000 loci, but to be honest I don’t plan on using most of them, I just wanted to improve observation and spatial skills by going on winding walks in my mind
It’s not the method that is the problem but the quantity of data.
If one wanted to learn pi to 200,000 places, they would have to create a journey of 50,000 loci using the dominic system.
That isn’t my goal but it is on a similar scale.
Does the information self-organize in any way?
You don’t really have to memorize your journeys before you start learning. If you write down the loci in order you can start memorizing data against the written loci and thus be learning the loci at the same time you’re learning the information.
I don’t really take the term loci literally as a location. It’s just an easy to remember sequence. If you wanted to you could use the words in a dictionary as loci or even the Major System extended out to 50,000 places. eg “less sis” or “leo is a sissy” As long as it generates an image you can link to it.
200,000 digits of Pi at 4 digits per location - I wouldn’t advise it! I have read that Dominic himself was considering memorising 50,000 digits of Pi several years ago. He was going to place multiple images on the same loci and create chain links to each image - which is exactly the approach I took to memorise the first 1,000 digits of Pi.
If you can place 5 images at each location then you would need 10,000 loci - if you can place 10 images at each location then this becomes just 5,000 loci - which is much more manageable.
That’s kind of my point, the dominic system is a good general purpose system but is not designed explicitly to remember a huge amount of data, although it can be used to do that. You might find it easier to use a slightly different system that better suits your memorisation goal.
An interesting if complicated system for memorising Pi is described at Memory Consulting and http://www.likanas.de/doc/The%20MikeMechtnon%20Method.pdf
Think I’ve come up with a solution that would easily create a massive amount of loci but want to really test it before I post it.
With that vast amounts of information I would use linking instead, in that way you don’t need any loci.
