Kevin's journey to chess and memory mastery

day 33: okay I think I hit a plateau, there’s a certain limit to how many images I can make a day and I’m not getting much faster nor does it look like I’m memorizing anymore. I’m gonna do some more research and hope it works out

I tried putting more effort into visualizing things, It came to me when I was reading world champion Dominick O’Brian’s book “50 steps to getting a good memory” he talked about an exercise to look at an object visualize it and recall as much detail as u can. He asked to do this a bunch of times, and I saw I was particularly bad at it so yeah I started to work on fixing it. When I don’t feel like memorizing chess. I just memorize cards for fun. best I did was 18 in 1 minute. the average is like 12 every 2 mins or something I don’t really measure it much since to me it’s fun it calms me down. I also memorized 3 chess games today. Overall the day was decent edit: I also forgot to mention I’m playing chess everyday and throughout the month my rapid rating went up from 1600 to 1730 online

day 35: forgot to write day 34 on my last post but I guess it’s fine. Today was the same as yesterday. I’m getting better and better. Memorizing feels less exhausting now, I memorized some chess and a few pages of networking

day 36: I’m working out a bit now, for now it’s just pullups, day 36 was just card memorizing and studying, and a bit of review for chess

Hi. How you memorize chess? You memorize the full match?

I memorize until move 20-30. when u reach that point no memorization is gonna help you

Txs. :+1:. I would like to memorize openings but I dont know how to use it. I uses the same always. I. Dont know how to study chess to play better.

depends on your rating, if you’re lower rated solve lots of puzzles and learn basic stuff abt openings and u should be fine

day 37: I’m still having some fun with memory, I can’t push it too much on chess cuz I’m pouring my time into study. And it’s okay for now. I have to memorize visual things like graphs and stuff using rote memory as I haven’t thought of doing it using mnemonics for now. Nor do I think I will ever. memorizing images in competitions is very different from memorizing graphs. so yeh my days was a combo of rote memorization and mnemonics. oh and I also had a bad chess day, rating went from 1755 to 1735

day 38: just got back from a text and I remembered everything using memory palace I think I did well. These last 37 days were well worth it. I hope i’ll be able to keep it up and improve more edit: my chess rating went down to 1700 I can’t focus at all . I think this is a call for me to stop playing and actually start studying edit: I made a mistake of not mixing spaced repetition anki cards with my memory palaces. I’m starting the 100 pages I memorized from scratch again. I’ll do it as many times as I have to so I could reach the goals

day 39:officially in a chess slump rating went down to 1685 memory is okay I can memorize 23 cards in a minute now. and i’m studying for another test tommorow so everything’s decent

day 40:Rest day

day 40: chess rating is 1650 now. I’m just gonna stop playing for 2 weeks and see what happens

Hi. What opening do you use more?

against the sicilian I use smith morra. It’s pretty difficult to learn but in tourneys IRL it can do very well since u hit opponents off guard. with white I only play e4 so against e5 I only play ruy lopez. with black and against everything else like caro kann or d4 etc… I only use my senses. These 40 days I’ve only been studying smith morra and computer science so I haven’t really touched any opening prep

Day 80: Hello it’s been almost 2 months already, and here were my discoveries while studying for my tests and studying chess.
I drew a grandmaster on the board in real life but my chesscom rating went down, I’ve gotten better but I simply don’t have the focus to get my rating up yet, My rating went down from almost 1700 to 1560. but I have a positive mindset and I know it will go up soon, plus I could always make a new account to get my rating up much faster so I’m not worried about the rating I’m worried abt the skill. I also did terrible on my tests because I memorized a lot more than I understood which is a problem in engineering or comp sci majors. So my bullet points are

  • Memory doesn’t equal understanding at all
  • Memory helps a lot in chess but it’s not enough you have to mix memory with some sort of understanding in chess

Hi. You can think. Write and then memorize.
