Kevin's journey to chess and memory mastery

I was just having a super good day. Lately I can’t even get close to that

day 21 : memorized 4 pages of text , it wasn’t that bad. I’m happy with my improvement it’s certainly better than before. But to improve much faster I’m gonna start practicing mindfulness and removing all distractions. starting with my cellphone. It sounds silly but slowly but surely the only thing that i’ll be thinking about is what I’m doing here. And for those asking, No I don’t need my cellphone since my country is at war. So I haven’t been doing much work at all lately

day 22: managed not to think of anything the whole day. art of memory didn’t open up

day 23 : today I slept super well it was like a 10 hour sleep and memorizing was so easy. My confidence got hit so bad cuz I thought I was bad at memorizing now. Well I am bad but I thought I was terrible. I should seriously train myself to memorize when I’m sleepy though since I can’t let a bad night’s sleep ruin my work.(My work is based around memorization so yeh…) oh and I forgot to mention that I talked to the national champ for memory in my region. I told him about my techniques and stuff. He said I should start to become good in 2 months time. This got me super excited, I hope good things will come soon

You’re really not going to get to 2500 rapid on chess.com any time in the near future and probably not ever. Even though memory is emphasized at the highest levels, you need to understand the techniques and strategies for a very long time before you can memorize all of what you need. I don’t know why you expect to get there.

“strategies” are opening themes. the ideas and key squares are different for each. the same with endgames. and u can boost your middle game using tactics. I’ve reached the 2000s with no opening or tactics training. Now what do u think would happen if such a person had extremely high level preparation? Which can only be attainable in a short period of time using memory skills. I can definitely at least pump my rating up 200 points .

Yes, you do have talent that you’ve gotten to that level, vastly more than me. I’ve taken chess seriously for 20 years and not even close to 2500 rapid, lol. I didn’t mean to come across as abrupt.

However due to the peculiar way chess.com ratings work it’s easier to get 2000 rapid than 2000 blitz, yet on the other hand it’s easier to get 2500 blitz than rapid.

If you look at the leaderboard you would be ranked 285 in the world by getting such a rating https://www.chess.com/leaderboard/live/rapid?page=6 , which includes the world’s elite and many professionals. There’s also issues of cheating at rapid. The rating pool is a lot different to blitz where there are ratings of up to 3200. On the other hand professionals don’t take it as seriously and there are unusual names near the top of the ranking list in rapid. Something funny for sure is going on with the rapid rating pool - I think it’s partly because for longer games people start to get paranoid about the other side cheating, and it’s a lot more of a time investment to put into it than blitz so there’s a lot more to lose if it becomes clear someone is cheating.

While memory techniques are useful for a lot of things I think you are probably better off learning chess the old fashioned way first.

problem is that’s what I have been doing for like 3 years. End forgetting too much of what I learnt as time passes by. Idk for now it’s definitely helping my opening preparation edit: I also didn’t realize that would make me rank 285 damn that’s insane

day 24: I tried memorizing while sleepy. I slept at 6 am and woke up at 10 am. It was pretty bad but I managed to memorize like 30 images. I’m starting to realize that diet and sleep are the most important 2 things in memory sports. I added a lot of carbs to my diet and this reduced headaches significantly. Also some sugar but I don’t think adding too much sugar is healthy. It’s 11 pm and I think I’ll probably call it a day or something. maybe I’ll memorize some more I don’t know. But I think changing my diet was super important .I’m glad I realized that

day 25: didn’t do sht

day 26: today was good I think I sat and memorized for like 3 hours or something. it wasn’t much, less than 100 images but close. difference it I wrote the images down neatly and recalled them. I feel like will power is a big part of this. Today I really feel like I gave it a good effort. I think if I manage to memorize like this a lot more often it would do wonders for my memory

Hi. How you use the words? You have lists in sheets of papers? Anki? Or how?

notebook. I describe my journey through the memory palace

day 27: I spent a couple of hours maybe like 5 just memorizing, huge headache won’t go away easily but i’m also happy it’s there.

day 28,29: it’s been a bit since I updated just memorizing as usual, day 28 I didn’t do much though

day 30: I started using anki cards for memorization, it makes recall easier and just getting everything together easier

Day 31: I learned the hard way that memorizing maths formulas using techniques isn’t worth it . Rote and space memorization are much better

Hi. You could combine both.

that’s definitely true. I might start testing stuff and trying it out

day 32:done with all the academic stuff so I’m probably gonna spend some of my evening memorizing chess and then up the pace on day 33
