Hi All,
Thought I’d share my journey for memorizing Greek Muses (See attached). I’m hoping others will all so post their journey / loci / memory palaces.
Hi All,
Thought I’d share my journey for memorizing Greek Muses (See attached). I’m hoping others will all so post their journey / loci / memory palaces.
I memorized them in a hostel in Iraklio on Crete that I used to stay at.
Format: Name / Domain / Emblem
The first five are arranged clockwise in a rooftop garden (attached image). Polyhymnia is on a couch inside the door, Terpsichore is by the hostel’s city map, Thalia is on a table, and Urania is by the drinks fridge.
Calliope / Epic Poetry / Writing Tablet:
“Cal” sounds like California, which reminds me of Bill & Ted’s style of speaking.
“Epic” is my image for 97, so I have them holding the Epic of Gilgamesh tablets and a writing tablet.
Clio / History / Scroll
I know someone named Cleo and I picture the person holding a scroll.
Erato / Love Poetry / Cithara
Eros playing a cithara.
Euterpe / Elegiac Poetry / Aulos
When I hear “terp” it reminds me of turpentine. Painting a coffin (turpentine is a thinner for oil paints) and playing an aulos.
Melpomene / Tragedy / Tragedy Mask
A melon (“mel”) carved into a tragic mask that is balanced on a pomegranate (“pom”).
Polyhymnia / Hymns / Veil
A choir singing hymns behind a veil.
Terpsichore / Dance / Lyra
Turpentine again. Painting while dancing around with a lyra.
Thalia / Comedy / Comic Mask
Someone named Talia doing a comedy skit.
Urania / Astronomy / Globe and Compass
A globe of Uranus and a drafting compass.
EDIT: I created a wiki page about memorizing the Greek Muses.
Great post thanks for sharing. I like the way you created a wiki page I’ll have to give that a try soon.
If anyone else has any other good memory lists out there please post them. It would be great to share the knowledge. I’m away from my laptop at the mo but will post my list of Australian Prime Ministers and how I broke down the names shortly.
If you would like access to edit the wiki, you can use this form.
If you want, you could put the list of prime ministers in the memory challenges section. That way people who are looking for lists of things to memorize will be able to find them easily. ![]()
(or post them in the forum if you prefer…)
All done I’ve posted the Aussie PMs list in the challenges section and included how I broke down the names for memorization.
