is it counterproductive to look at the back of a flashcard if you know the answer?
What are the pros and cons?
I personally prefer to whizz past the answer after every card, even if i think that i got it correct, and sometimes i do it too quickly and realise that i was wrong after the card is gone, so i definetely would recomend seeing the answer even if you think youre right. Recall wise im convinced it makes no difference whetever you see the answer again if you know.
No. The only con is you will spend time on something you already remember.
Reinforcing the illusion of competence every time that you believe you got it right, don’t check and reinforce the error doesn’t seem worth it.
I don’t see how glancing at the answer takes THAT much time anyway. Unless the back of your card is a wall of text (too long answer), in that case your problem is that the card is badly done and that is a much bigger problem!
