Integration of memory techniques into daily learning, studying, and professional skill development?

I’m curious to what extent people have been successful in streamlining workflows of memory techniques to prevent them from being cumbersome or convoluted in relation to regular everyday learning situations either as students or professionals?

Would be curious if anyone has developed some foundational and flexible frameworks for activities such as reading scientific articles, textbooks, etc.

Do you implement SRS software such as Anki?

I keep a list of palaces for “temporary storage” of information.

If I want to keep the information when I’m done reading/studying/listening I can either keep using that palace or organize the information in different palace in a more thoughtful, less on-the-fly manner.

I use anki. Not always, but I use it. My flash cards are regular style. I don’t make references to my mnemonics or my palaces. Just regular old questions about the info I memorized and their respective answers.

Similar to beau2am, I keep a list of palaces for immediate use. The difference, I presume, is that I have reusable palaces for each day of the week.

I also frequently use a calendar system with mnemonics for each month-day of the year. It’s also useful for knowing the week of the year and the number of days since the beginning of the year.

My future plan is to use the calendar method to implement a spaced recall practice.

It would involve a daily practice of reviewing material from 1 day ago, 1 week ago, 1 month ago, 6 months ago. (Maybe the intervals would need to be adjusted, but that’s the concept.)

Interesting. I was hoping to re-use all my locations if I could get enough locations to learn academic material for 3-6 months~ as it might be passed off from hippocampus (spatially-grounded) to higher cortical areas by that time. I haven’t tested it out properly though, so there may be hiccups.

Is the idea that you have the loci in sequence based on time, and then you just visit certain parts of your journey at those intervals? I guess that is quite smart in some ways if I am understanding correctly, as then you can do it entirely internally without requiring an external aid like Anki.

Yes, that is the main idea. Info to be retained long term could be tagged with a date mnemonic. Then, for example, you might review yesterday’s items, one week ago, four weeks ago, etc, according to your preferred spaced repetition intervals.

I am not against using Anki, but I do feel that the extra mental manipulation of information being self tested is often helpful—and confidence building.

All that said, this approach could be taken too far. There could be lots of cases where Anki might be the better approach.
