INFO about PEG LISTS

Hi, i started to “study” with the free ebook and i have a question about peg lists: how do i memorize the peg list, i mean if i have to do the one for number beetween 00 and 99 what should i do? Because i have a list with the phonetic scheme but how do i memorize it, is there a way ?

Learning your peg words will require time and repetition. If you are using a phonetic system like the Major System to generate your words it makes things a little bit easier when learning because the sounds will give you clues to what the word should be.

For example:

22: 2 gets the N sound. So your word for 22 would be N-N with a vowel filling in the gap. An easy fit would be NuN.

So when you see the number 22, recognize the sounds, say them, almost like “nuh-nuh” and after a few days of practice you’ll establish a connection linking those numbers to those sounds and those sounds to the word “nun.”

After a while, you’ll be able to read the numbers directly without having to actively translate the sounds because you’ll have built fluency with the sounds and the words you’ve picked.

To practice well, I recommend using a flashcard program, making 100 cards, on one side have the number and on the other side have the word and if possible an image for that word. Keep track of the tough associations and practice them more often. The Anki flashcard program will schedule reviews for you based on how easy you rate your answers to be.

Learning a system will take time. If you spend just 15 minutes reviewing each association, then 100 associations will take 25 hours. This is probably a low estimate of the time you’ll need to develop your list to the point where you’re comfortable with it.

thank you, so to memorize i dont need to use the memory palace and store all of them?

You can if you want. I would recommend just using the phonetics to key your words.

The goal is to see the number and immediately visualize the image you’ve associated with it with as few in-between conversations as possible. If you have to navigate through a memory palace in order to get to that association, thats an extra unnecessary conversion.

Personally I would not bother trying to link your peg words #00 - #99 into a palace. I am a little biased in this suggestion as I would make use of the peg word system as a palace itself.

So for example, if I want to know what the 22nd element in the Periodic Table is (which happens to be Titanium), I would use a substitute word for the element, which could be ‘Tits’, associate that by way of a bizarre image to the NuN (#22) and I could literally rattle off all elements of the Periodic table through making similar bizarre elaborative images in my minds eye.

I know to the purists, this suggestion of using pegs as loci may not be agreed with, but it has the advantage of being able to go straight to the number position which the image (e.g. NuN) is merely acting as a placeholder for. With a memory palace to get to position #22, you would have to walk through your palace in a sequential fashion which I think is a little time consuming. Staying with the periodic table example, if I wanted to know what position Zinc is in the table, I could conjure up an image of a MouSe (#30) scurrying around in my kitchen SINK (substitute word for Zinc).

Yes! Also, you could easily add a place/loci for each of the numbers 1 to 100 like this, 22 is nun - monistary. 95 is ball - baskeball court, 1 is tie - mens wear store. This way you can use the object freely, and the loci for the periodic table.

That sounds like good idea to assign loci to you peg lists in that way. So looking at my Major System peg words for #30 to #39, I might ascribe the following loci to each of them:

#30 = mouse - loci = Pet shop
#31 = mat - loci = Turkish mat shop
#32 = moon - loci = Apollo 11 Spaceship
#33 = mummy - loci = Egyptian pyramid
#34 = mower - loci = my garden
#35 = mule - loci = Farm yard
#36 = match - loci = Houses of Parliament (Gunpowder, treason and plot)
#37 = mug - loci = Starbucks Coffee Shop
#38 = movie - loci = Hollywood Studio
#39 = mop - loci = Broom closet

Or another way to ascribe loci to a 100 image peg list is to use the Major System’s coding as @TheHumanTim has done:

#30 = MaZe
#31 = MeaDow
#32 = MiNe
#33 = MoMa
#34 = MaRina
#35 = MaLL
#36 = MaCHu (picchu)
#37 = MeCCa
#38 = MoVie (theatre)
#39 = MoB (hideout)

I think @TheHumanTim method has the advantage of it codes directly from the phonetic Major System, so its possibly easier to envisage?

Anyway both ways are good ideas indeed

Also, say 1 is TIE = mens wear store, you can add to the method by visualizing a store in different locations, say London, Paris, New York. Then you get 3 sets of 100 loci each

To further expand this, use various words for the same numbers, like tie, toe, tee, tea, ID, etc, to get, in this case, 500 pegs instead of just 100, plus the additional 500 loci
