Hello I was wondering does a memory technique where you put a loci inside a loci and so forth? If so does it work or is it simply uneneccesary?
You can always “zoom in” mentally on your various loci to create more anchor-points to memorise things on. An example can be seen in the picture of this post.
I’d say it’s very useful for normal studying/learning if you’re lacking loci, but less useful for competitions where speed is crucial (based on your introduction post I’m assuming that this will not be a problem for you :)).
For me, it would be an interesting experiment to try, but not something I’d want to use regularly. I actually enjoy walking through my memory palaces, all of which are based on real places that, in most cases, no longer exist. In fact, for me, walking the palaces is part of the pleasure I get from memory techniques. I wouldn’t want to lose that by just focusing more and more on what would invariably become imaginary close up views of existing locations.
Where I can see this approach being most effective—at least for me—is in adding additional details to information in an existing memory palace. There, it would make logical sense to look closer and closer at a specific location in order to find out more related information.
But, as we say so often here, if it works for you, then pursue it. And there’s no harm in just trying it out. In doing so, you may discover some specific tricks/approaches that make it especially effective for you.
