So I know the our forum has its own icon that is just one of Giordano Bruno’s seals (imagined geometrical patterns turned into palaces with loci) but the symbol itself is rather complex. I am trying to construct a symbol to represent mnemonics and mnemonists and am wondering where to begin.
In other words, what do you all think should be included in a symbol for mnemonics, keep in mind I want to make it much simpler than the forum page symbol.
Thanks all,
Zellion
have you tried chat gpt’s image generation? it’ll probably come up with cool stuff
Maybe Mnemnosyne. Often depicted with one of the masks worn by ancient Greek and Roman actors.
Perhaps something relating to theatre? Since the method of loci requires ‘scenes’ acted out on ‘stages’ -the world is your stage- and some historical mnemonists (Fludd, Camilo) explicitly use theaters in their writings. Add to that the notion of the mask or ‘persona’, stemming from roman theater and being the source of the concept of legal personhood, to allude to the images and actor representing not themselves, but something else (abstract information).
Alright, over a year later and with the help of my friend who shall be accredited as Ettrigar: It’s done.
Two variants on the symbol.
I thought through the motifs I wanted to include for this. And the first thing that struck me was a candle. The second thing was an owl, but I decided that an owl would be too complex, so simplifying to feather and this is the result. I hope this design or similar ideas will work for something to signify human memory as we don’t really have a good symbol for that currently. If one were to type in memory symbol you usually get something computer chip related, which while cool, ends up implying digital, which isn’t my goal.
Anyhow, I hope it catches on
Sincerely,
Zellion
