I want to memorize short Quotes

I don’t know how to go about memorizing 5-10 word quotes.

I memorize a lot of quotes, since they tend to help me a lot in life, but I’ve mostly done it with natural memory. When I did start putting them in a memory journey, it was to help me recall all of them in order.

If you provide a few example quotes, we could try to brainstorm some ideas for memorizing them.

Have you heard of the Method of Loci?

I use that but words like “the” are hard to come up with an image for.

You only need to memorize the nouns in the quote when using the Loci method. Your brain will fill up the less important words that are in between.

1.Nobody can hurt me without my permission -Gandhi
2.You have to be odd to be number one -Seuss
3.It’s not the lie that bothers me its the insult to my intelligence that offends me -Anonymous

These are a few.

According to the rules of Loci, you first need to recite the sentence in question three times so that the natural memory is stimulated. You can use the link/story method with the Loci method for some of these. N stands for nouns.

  1. N(me, permission): I would imagine myself picking up a golden shield, and someone in full armor coming towards “me”, then as he is about to strike, I kneel and put the shield up as defense and I shake my head to signify “permission.”
  2. N(odd, one): I would simply see an odd looking man with a large hat and he is putting one of his fingers up to represent one.
  3. You can try this one.

I wouldn’t create an image for every word. It’s possible to memorize quotes with natural memory (using some spaced repetition if necessary). The method of loci is a way to organize the quotes into order (so you can be sure that you don’t miss any) and to get past the “tip of the tongue” effect where you can almost remember the quote but need a clue to jog your memory.

Everyone has different types of mnemonics that work for them. My approach would be to use minimal images:

For the Gandhi quote, I would picture Gandhi and an image for either the word “hurt” or “permission”. Natural memory would fill in the rest.

For the Dr. Seuss quote, I would use an image of one of his characters along with an image for “1” or “odd”. That would be enough for me to recall the quote.
