I need tips for combining memory techniques effectively with calculations

I need tips on how to use encoding and recall effectively with calculations. I have noticed that pausing to encode an intermediate answer seems to distract me a bit. Also recalling seems to cause a kind of small ‘zoning out’ effect for me.

For example, if I were solving a problem on vectors and ‘go’ to retrieve a sine value when I ‘return’, there seems to be some kind of disoriented feeling after the recall. This doesn’t seem like a problem so far with subjects not involving calculations (probably because with the subjects I am learning now, I don’t need to further process a recalled fact).

Does anyone else experience anything similar? Are there any tips for coping with this? If so, please share.
