How would one put a physical sequence of moves into a memory palace?
Examples: martial arts sequence (think kata or tai chi), a yoga workout with multiple postures, a specific weight lifting routine etc.
Thanks

The idea of trying to put kata on memory palace is you being LAZY on youside. Even if you remember the sequence into memory palace it might not be that return on investment. Why? because physical movements are related to motor activites, the most robust memory system that the body posses even better than visuo-spatial memory that Memory palace relies on.
I have earned red belt on takewando and I do not rely on any other technique other than the instruction of master. I did it the old way, every steps executed slowly and counting steps as 1, 2, 3 etc. It becomes almost a second nature after a month. The katas are there for physical rigour.
After you genuenly accept the truth only then you can use Memory palace as a way of experimentation. I recommend relating first stance of kata no ! to PAOâs no 1 and encode it in first location of your memory palace and continue from there. After that you could just practice that kata thinking of first image in your memory palace for first instance than go from there.
To start learning a move or a kata it makes sense to wish for a memory palace.
And to train yourself trough it.
But later you might not have the time to think which palace is the right one.
Especially if you later train with a partner.
Or do free style training with a partner.
Before you found the right palace you got hit by the partner.
There exist also a training exercise that contains to close your eyes and ârunâ the kata in your mind.
This is to train your understanding of the katagram.
But before this you need to learn the kata well enough to do this.
And so general speaking: a memory palace might be in 99% not the ideal solution.
Martial arts rely on the body to remember what comes next.
The body has not an understanding of visual memory techniques as the imagination.
It acts and reacts on what it feels ( is it colder now? / is something that hurts me?) and had done in the past ( learned movements / trained to react in certain situations with a move or staying on the same place because nothing dangerous happens).
My experience of memory palace work is that after awhile I just know the thing. I donât need to recall it in a memory palace. Isnât that how itâs supposed to work?
If you know memory palace method so well, what exactly is the question?
You could see yourself doing one move and place it on one location.
Or you use the chain method.
One other possible option is the map method:
You have a map in cells ( like a physical city map or a spreadsheet )
And on the relevant cells you place one move and on the next cell the next move.
Then your training is:
This way you build a 2 dimensional map.
But what I do not understand is what your goal is.
This is from your question not clear.
Hey, that might not exactly what you are looking for, but Dominic OâBrien has in his first book a section about applying the memory palace to skills. Itâs basically that you take a skill or move apart and associate the different constituents to space and record feedback from a trainer with that. So you have the detailed feedback ready in practice while working on the skill.
Not sure.
And I havenât done it.
I was impressed by the mnemonist use of movement:
This thread looks like it might be relevant:
Hi,
As someone whoâs done various kinds of MA like JKD concepts, Arnis and jiu-jitsu it would be best to do the moves or patterns and then formulate the memory palace rooms based on the sequence.
Sequence is key and doing the moves also helps to reinforce the kinetic memory.
