How to memorize number pegs?

I’m expanding my number pegs to get all from 00-99. When I made my first 20 I placed them in a journey to memorize them. Problem is the loci from the journey got stuck in the memory just as much as the numbers mnemonic. When using the pegs the loci comes along for the ride and that’s not always the best.

Any tips on how to memorize pegs without a journey/palace?

Are you using the Major system for your pegs?

Yes.

Then I do not really understand the problem. Are you saying you cannot remember the peg words? Or the word or images you are trying to link to the peg words?

if you’re using the major system you can just go from number to letters to word:

  • 01 > ST > seat
  • 07 > SK > sock
  • 12 > TN > tuna
  • 18 > TF > tofu

I’d still use a memory palace though because adding a location makes it easier to remember in the beginning. If you spread 00 … 99 across seven palaces you can memorize the year codes for calendar calculation at the same time, so you get even more out of it.

Place all the years that have 1 as a code on a route (a palace if you like) that reminds you of Monday. All the years that have 2 as a code on a route that reminds you of Tuesday, etc.

This way you have seven smaller routes, which is easier to learn than one big one; plus it will take you seconds to name the weekday for any date. The example above is all double digits (years) that have 1 as a code.

Month codes (Jan - Dec): 6, 2, 2, 5, 0, 3, 5, 1, 4, 6, 2, 4

Just add the day, month code, and year code together and divide by 7… the remainder is the weekday.

E.g.,

15 Jun 2018 (tofu is 1 because on the Monday route)
15 + 3 + 1 = 19
19 / 7 = 2 remainder 5
5 = Friday

27 Aug 2007 (sock is 1 because on the Monday route)
27 + 1 + 1 = 29
29 / 7 = 4 remainder 1
1 = Monday

It’s a win-win… you’ll know how to do calendar calculation and you get to train your major system as you do the weekday calculation.

The problem is that the peg is so etched into the loci that when I use the peg the background comes with. It makes it hard when the peg is going to be placed another loci and interact with other mnemonics.
I hope that make more sense.

I memorized my systems by going directly from the digits to the sounds (no memory journey). One way to learn them is to print a few sheets of random numbers and carry them around in your pocket. Practice reading the numbers and mark any that you miss. Then look up the ones you missed, figure out why you weren’t able to recall them, and then practice again with another set of random numbers. Keep repeating until you can recall all of them from the digit-to-sound conversion. If you do that a few times per day, it should be possible to learn a 00-99 system within a few days.
