How to Go about Memorizing Greek Root Words

Hey guys,

I have a test on Tuesday about Greek Root words. The table looks like this:

a,an - without, not
acro - top,tip, end
algia,algy - pain
allo - other
amphi,amph - both, around

I have about 60 of these to memorize, and in the test, they ask the root word, and you give the definitions, or vice versa.

How do I memorize this, if I have no prior experience in mnemonics? Should I do rote memorization?

Thanks,
Wadamella

It got moved to thursday. Please help.

Hi Wadamella.

I’ve had to do this a while back as well. I usually just memorized words that use those roots and that I know the meaning of.
a,an - without, not
acapella(without music(I imagined a scene from ‘8 mile’ that had a guy rapping acapella)), Anonymous(the hacker group face mask).
acro - top,tip, end
Acrophobia(fear of heights(just imagine a guy looking very scared on top of a scyscraper))
algia,algy - pain
This one I can’t think of any, I would probably just imagine something like a guy slipping on some algae and hurting himself. etc.

Just saw you don’t know anything about mnemonics. Read this. Basically you can place images around your home or classroom that represent each word. Pick words that are easy to visualize and that you know the meaning of.

I am Greek (born/raised). I understand that for some foreign people it’s hard to go through all Greek Root words like these:

But if you are gonna deal with medicine, pharmacology or a few sciences these roots are gonna be very useful to learn. I recommend the above wiki lists to all people that wanna learn Greek.

The best advice I can give is to attribute 1 specific
‘guide’ word for each root that you know VERY well.

Bateman, about -algia (/άλγος = pain,) actually the most common greek word for pain is: πόνος/ponos. ‘άλγος’ is only used in formal medical circumstances.

Feel free to ask me about how we use each specific word or root in greek (modern or ancient)
