hello. I discovered the memory palace and ran into a huge wall that i can’t seem to fix. I have been studying music theory and have all of the key signatures as images in my head. The problem is that i can’t access any of my memory palace memories unless i see the first answer: for example C D E F G A B C is the C major scale, But i have to see C and get my memory palace started up in order to see the rest. A B C D E F G A is the natural minor scale, same problem i need to in other words get the fire started by seeing the first letter. I can’t call upon the information by name and find it, my mind is blank no matter how much i have practiced. Do you have any tips for being able to label memories almost like a movie shelf? Another way i can explain the problem is this analogy: Let’s watch an action movie, which one? the one where the boxer wins the championship belt, most boxing movies have this so i don’t know what movie you are talking about. Any tips are appreciated,
Using a journey though the palace with which you have to start at C major to get to the rest of the key signatures isn’t too bad if you don’t have a lot of scales to memorize. If there are too many and you want to jump around faster, it may be useful to use a peg system (e.g. Major or Dominic system) and closely associate the key signature with the peg system item in your palace. A peg system converts numbers (e.g. 0-99) into images, so you could assign your scales to numbers (e.g. C major at 1, B major at 6), and then have your key signature images interacting with the peg images (i.e. C major signature interacting with your image for the number 1).
Have you considered using acronyms to memorize key signatures though? Back in school we just learned this wheel:
You start with F (skip this), C major which has no sharps, then when you go to G you add F# (F from two steps back), then you go to D major and add C# (C from two steps back), so on and so forth. So if you know the order FCGDAE… you can work out the key signature for any major scale.
One example for an acronym I found online for the sharp major scales is:
Good
Dogs
All
Eat
Beef
F(#)ast
then if you know that the circle begins with F and C, you know that for F# major you take sharps for all the notes starting from F going up till two steps before F#, so F#, C#, G#, D#, A#, and E#
There are other acronyms for the flat major scales, minor scales and so on but you can make up your own
Hope this helps if you’re considering anything besides using a memory palace
Do you mean that you want to be able to think “key of E” and immediately recall that it has four sharps, F#, C#, G#, and D#? Or something different?
