How do you get faster at memorizing words ?

How do you get FASTER memorizing words ? I make up stories to do 14 words but I need more time than a minute !
I can do 10 words in a minute but 14 is hard .

Method of loci. I use two images per locus, but others use one, or three. Practice converting words into images as often as possible. Get lists of random words (you can do so on this site) and practice, practice, practice. If you put two images/locus you can imagine the images interacting. Practice doing this, too. If your words are “flamingo” and “fire”, imagine the flamingo bursting into flames. Get on Memory League and start training. You’ll be able to gauge your progress versus other people who enjoy such things.

It depends on what the words are for. Is it a sentence? Random words? Some might take more time than others because of the information you are learning. But at the end of the day, it comes down to practicing. Every word you see, try to come up for an image for it. GO with your first association and try not to over think it. When practicing, never compare your self to others. Just focusing on beating your own times and scores. That is the true measurement of progress and success.

I practice about an hour each day on 14 words two words per locci . I can’t make the one minute time limit to memorize 14 words so I gave myself more time on the custom feature . I do better on giving myself more time but I get the locci confused sometime . For example I use ant bee cat dog elephant frog and giraffe for locci over and over in an hour . Should I make different locci ?

Your “loci” sound like pegs to me. Are you sure you are using the method of loci (placing things in physical locations in your mind)?

Just to clarify what Grandzam said, Eddie, you are definitely using a “peg” system. Perfectly usable system (although most people on these forums prefer the Method of Loci). The issue you’re having arises from not having enough pegs, and you have to cycle back around the first peg too quickly, and this can confuse your mind (“what is interacting with that ant?”). If you are using two images per peg, then you’re really going to have to imagine both images interacting with each other AND the peg (or maybe your first image interacting with the peg, and then the second image interacting with the first image). Get yourself at least 25 pegs (preferably more), so they don’t repeat as often. After you do this, maybe practice without the time constraints, and really work hard on making those interactions interesting and memorable. I’ll bet you’ll be able to do 50 words in no time. And then you can start working on your speed.

After trying more pegs like frog giraffe hippo iguana all the to zebra , I found I wasn’t doing as well as loci I made thru my apartment . I’d interact my words with frog and giraffe . I would just not remember as well when I used my apartment . I don’t know why but its better . The first time I tried to my apartment loci I got all 14 words right .

I think you’re finding out what most people have discovered - that the Method of Loci is more powerful. Good luck. Add more loci to your Apartment, then start adding other places you’ve lived, gone to school, played, shopped, etc., and in no time you’ll have hundreds of loci with which to practice.
