How do I memorize times tables upto 50 for instant recall without having to work them out?

I want to be able to recall times tables upto 50 (or multiplication facts upto 50x50) instantly in my head without having the need to work them out mentally or on paper because doing that distracts me from the problem at hand and also takes time which I am short of as I am preparing for competitive exams after my graduation.
For example: I know 8x4=32, I don’t have to work it out in my head. In the same way I want to be able to recall 27x13, 43x29 etc.
Any ideas?

Start with extending your multiplication tables to 20.

2 Multiplication is often as easy as memorization.

If you sit down and make a table 100x100 you will discover very quickly that the number of facts that you feel require memorization is much smaller than you originally thought.

Side thoughts… 8x4 was not learned as a mnemonic. You did not encode a picture, or an acronym. The time spent to encode or decode mnemonic multiplication would like be as long as the time/effort required to simply do the multiplication. A mnemonic could be a good intermediate step toward rote memorization.

Familiarity with numbers improves ability. If you spend time with them every day they become less abstract.

Learning your multiplication tables is hard work. The same can be said for math in general but if you do it every day then it will be just as hard but you will be able to do more. A 200 pound weight doesn’t get lighter as you get stronger.

How do I use major system 0-99 umages, 10,000 step journey? Can you give me examples for 2-3 multiplication facts?
Can we use Dominic or PAO system for times tables? If you think yes please give me an examples how you would do it using these. I am new to the techniques and I want to learn times tables quickly.

It would be too much time consuming to encode and memorise and also to retrieve and practice revision. I thought about this a long time ago and after trying to do it I failed badly. It’s too time consuming to retrieve and encode. Trust me. But, you can of course try it.

Perhaps you could use a modified PAO system.
For example: 27 x 13 = 10 x 20 + 3 * 30 + 10 * 7 + 3 * 7
If you had 45 images for the 45 ways to choose 2 numbers from 0 to 9 to multiply together. Then you could encode this problem as a sequence of 4 images. Then if you could devise some way to visually combine two adjacent images into a third, representing addition, then you could collapse those 4 images into the answer of the problem. Such a system that made mnemonic or visual sense would truly be a work of art, though.

This also wouldn’t really be memorization as much as a different way of carrying out the problem. :confused:

Yes, you can totally memorise that. Find a good book in the list of books about memory you’ll find a list on the forum if you search 2 mn. beguin with a litle book ‘self help’ style. Train regulary. You’ll become a fluent memory practitionner. in a few weeks/months.

The bad news. Finding multiplication ‘distracting’ is one of the symptom you HAVE to bypass to train your mind. And trust me, you can do it. It takes efforts, but it’s totally Worth it.

Because it’s NOT about math. It’s about constructing a good working habbit. It’s the ability to use you school time (and not let your school time using you…). It will help you all life long.

I know lots of gifted people that use their ability as a crutch to avoid facing the things they don’t like. Please, please…don’t do that. If you learn Memory Methods, use them to enhance your abilities, not to replace them.

I’ll gives you ONE trick. Gives yourself half an hour five days a week, and use it to train or study on things you are weak/don’t like/find confusing. Do NOTHING else. No distractions. no phone, music, computer…Just doing it. Keep yourself concentrated on the same page if you can’t do anything else. After a (short) time, your brain will prefer to boost your ability to resolve it than to endure boredom. You’ll develop a strong concentation and a working method from this. You’ll get stronger.
(Gives yoursel a little reward each time you succed doing it, even if you don’t completely succed: your favorite drink, a chat with your friend etc.
If you can’t, don’t punish yoursel (masochism doesn’t help). Just do Something else wich is not a punition neither a reward.

Having doing that (with the same problems as you) i’m able to do most operations (‘complex’ divisions, multiplications, soustrations etc in my mind… and i’m not specially gifted in math)

I don’t say: take away any joy from your life. On the contrary, if you want to enjoy life, don’t let things you don’t like having to much importance in your time. So, kick your ass, suffer a little to avoid great future pain.

I would think that the easiest way would be to use the phonetic system.
For example. 3439=1326. Link your keywords for 34 and 39 and link a word for 1326. Of course a well learned keyword list up to 50 would make this pretty easy since you are only developing a word or two for the answer. Example : a mower (34) runs over a mop (39), the resulting bits are spit out of the mower and sticking to the moon (who is wearing a nice tie) as a beard (1326) - - tie (1) on an old moon (because of the beard): which is indicated by the words “moon age” (326). So, the whole picture equates to 34×39=1326. Of course it takes a lot longer to describe than to imagine it.
Of course you don’t need 50
50 combinations since multiplication is commutative
