Hi from Holland + finishing my PAO

Hi there,
First of all, this site is awesome! I’ve learned so much reading the Wiki and forums!
I got into memorizing through card magic. I read Harry Lorayne’s ‘How to develop a Super Power Memory’ and started using the Peg system for everyday use. I recently finished Dominic O’Brien’s ‘How To Develop a Perfect Memory’ and I’m completing my Dominic System list and decided to incorporate the PAO technique I found in the Wiki.

Lists of other people have helped me alot in the process of making my own. So here is mine so far, hoping to be helpfull to someone else. Since I’m Dutch alot of people from other lists don’t ring a bell. Like Neil Diamond for example. If I’m not able to come up with someone else for number 94 should I just ‘get to know’ Neil Diamond or should I choose a character (that’s totaly unrelated to number 94 and the initials ND) which has memorable and unique actions?

I don’t expect you guys to fill all the blanks but perhaps post some suggestions. I guess I’m looking for unique actions rather than people. I find it difficult to come up with unique actions and objects for each one of them. I admire people using the Ben system!

So far I haven’t used this list yet but I’m not sure if I’m able to create images with the current actions/verbs I have at the moment. ‘Invading’ for example (George Bush’s action) seems tough to imagine. Should I change the actions I’m not sure of or should I just try this list out and perhaps change afterwards?

Here it is, I mentioned my associations in case someone’s interessted.

Hi omgwtf, (got a name?

You’ve done a lot of work on your list. Looking good.

10 - AO - ? - ? - ? I have Annie Oakley trickshooting from a horse

I like your EO with Eeyore. I might steal that one from you. I have Edward Olmos in a zoot zuit.

Since, after you learn them, the P and the A and the O never interact again, they take on their own images pretty quickly. So if you can’t come up with an action you can use an arbitrary one like crashing or burning or vomiting etc.

Best of luck,
Dale

Hi, and welcome! As a fellow newbie, I concur that this site is fantastico.

I also use the Dominic system - I have a complete list but I’m just about to go through and refine it as some of my POAs are just not personal or vivid enough. As I only have a few holes, I’m not fixating on having characters who correspond to the initials, just making sure I have a strong association. I’m also going to make sure that each new replacement is someone I really enjoy imaginging.

Here are my comments to your list - I hope you find it useful.

Cheers.

02 - OB - Obi Wan Kenobi - ? - Lightsabre I’d imagine Obi Wan disappearing in his ‘monk habit’ and then the habit falls to the floor.
05 - OE - ? - ? - ? Orient Express, brakes screeching.
10 - AO - ? - ? - ? Aristotle, adopting ‘the thinker pose’. He’s also made of bright white stone.
29 - BN - ? - ? - ? Bill Nighy (who played ‘the kraken’ in the Pirates of the Caribbean films). He’s throwing dead man’s dice
47 - DG - ? - ? - ? Any favourite dogs you could use?
51 - EA - ? - ? - ? I am a keen gamer and used Tiger Woods from the EA Sports games - though I’m just about to replace him with a character from the SSX series. His action was driving a golf ball
57 - EG - ? - ? - ? Earl Grey, a fine archetype to a keen tea drinker like myself. He’s drinking tea.
61 - SA - ? - ? - ? Stone Cold’ Steve Austin
62 - SB - ? - ? - ? Sepp Blatter of FIFA (soccer), juggling a football
65 - SE - ? - ? - ? Shannon Elizabeth from the ‘American Pie’ films, dancing on a laptop.
67 - SG - ? - ? - ? Stewie Griffin from Family Guy, sucking his thumb
69 - SN - ? - ? - ? Maybe the phrase ‘69’ isn’t well known outside of the US/England? However, I had no problems finding a person / image. Better not share it though! I originally had Sam Neill, who starred in Jurassic Park, and he was getting electrocuted on an electric fence, poor chap.
71 - GA - Georgio Armani - ? - Suit Striking a pose on the catwalk?
75 - GE - ? - ? - ? I think of Edison (founder of GE), lighting a lightbulb
76 - GS - Grandpa Simpson - ? - Denture I use the same! I have him hobbling along on a walking stick.
79 - GN - ? - ? - ? I think of Axl Rose from Guns n Roses, kicking a drum and puncturing it.
85 - HE - ? - ? - ? He-man, shouting ‘I have the power’ and brandishing his sword.
89 - HN - ? - ? - ? Horatio Nelson, arm in his coat, standing on one leg on top of his column in London
94 - ND - ? - ? - ? Neil Diamond, giving a concert on an acoustic guitar. I need to change him too, he’s not personal enough.
QS - Oprah - ? - ? I have Oprah as 01 - she’s interviewing on a leather couch
JS - John Travolta - ? - ? He could be dancing in that white suit, or taking his own face off
KD - ? - ? - ? I think of riches for Diamonds, and have Prince William as King, with a sceptre, going down on one knee (he recently got married). Are there any similar characters in Holland?

Thanks! I indeed should have mentioned my name: Daniel! The Eeyore is not my idea I found it on another list. Perhaps there should be a thread or wiki page with lists of other people  I found it very usefull.

Yes, once I find initials for all numbers I will assign arbitrary actions to them if necessary. The advantage is that the actions WILL be memorable regardless of the person or object.

Thanks alot! Not all names ring a bell but you certainly helped me along!

So it is possible to go back after using the system and reassign people if the current ones aren’t so memorable for some reason?

Yes, but if the first images is strong, it may stick around as a “ghost” for a long time.

I still have old Dominic System images faintly appear for some numbers like 20 and 72, even though I haven’t used that system in a long time. I really burned those into my head over 7 months though.

I’m still changing images around. 27 was “ankh” until a couple of weeks ago, but now it’s “anchor”. That one wasn’t too difficult to change, because the 2nd image is much better.

How about?

10 - AO - ? - ? - ?

Austin Osman Spare. English painter. See:

29 - BN - ? - ? - ?

Benny Nijman? Dutch singer.

47 - DG - ? - ? - ?

Domenico Dolce en Stefano Gabbana or Dolce & Gabbana for short.

69 - SN - ? - ? - ?

SiNterklaas?

For non Dutch people: sinterklaas is the dutch version of Santa Claus.

Thanks everyone!

I have finished my PAO a while ago and I’m currently using it to practise deck memorization! Some actions I might have to alter since they are too vage or are too similar with others.

I made a document on Google Docs with a few of other people’s PAO’s:

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1CKsjYQOj0JhKNge5So3S2qtevood8tSKfvsW8AdWFao/edit

The sources are also included. I realy found it helpfull to view other people’s lists while making mine so I hope other people find it usefull who are starting out
