Gavino's Massive Memory Palace System - Practical Examples

What do you do with the plot of these scenes? do you have peg type images? and if you do, do you conform their interactions to the context of the plot?

Isnt having using one person in a loci viewed from different perspectives confusing?

thank you

Did you try it?

Sorry for the delay,i just didn’t check the mail account where I receive emails from the forum until today, i apologize, all of you in the forum have been of great help, I’ll go into detail. Edutopia the plot of each episode is the one that helps me remember the 10 scenes in sequence, to be honest i don’t remember them by number if I recall one of these 10, I know the past and the next scene, is when i remember since the first scene when itĀ“s easy but, thatĀ“s my goal, add information so i can remember it sequentially. Yes, the actions, characters, images are just in context so itĀ“s not confusing if I have the same action on my PAO for numbers. at the moment i used characters just for the show journeys not for other systems, maybe itĀ“s not confusing because in this particular show the images presented are quite unique and memorable for example:In one chapter, thereĀ“s a kid watching static on the tv and writing down numbers, he put the pages in the floor then they put an image of the missed girl formed by the pages. In other chapter thereĀ“s a baby alien in a jar. Actually it was the reason I choose this show. The type of scenes iĀ“m using are like the examples i gave, I pretty much donĀ“t recall all of the people that appear on the show just what happens.

Bellator17 apart from main characters like mulder, scully, their boss and the bad guy who smokes all the time, some people it’s impossible to forget, but others don’t have anything special so i forget them, i just recall what they did, how, but it is pretty much the scenes that are hard to forget the ones that are working, like much people in the forum, i’m still experimenting with different things, i’m limited right now to this show, i donĀ“t have much time to keep collecting the journeys i need, that’s why I been using this sort of method, i donĀ“t have time to physically go and visit places, which iĀ“d like to, and then dedicate time to remember the buildings or houses. ItĀ“s when im tired of all other activities i just want to listen to a book or watch tv, when i do, i watch the chapter and then, what i remember i choose 10 (at first, i stop the episode to write down scenes but it is anoying when you just want to rest).

Kinma if the question was for me, yes, right now is the only thing i use to remember (a part of for my PAO for numbers-which i havenĀ“t finished and iĀ“m using 1-9 PAO hahaha…), i just stick sentences or info, but im using episodes at random, or the same for different things, i donĀ“t now why but i guess because itĀ“s easier, thatĀ“s why i started to use it, as a quick fix, when i have the time iĀ“ll like to try adding regular journeys(houses, buildings, if they are used by a lot of experts it is because they work).
i just have 2 movies at the moment as journeys but i haven’t used them, i’m just with this show now

Hope this helps, im doing a PAO for letters and finishing the one for numbers, when i start using the PAO and keep adding more shows as journeys is when i“ll find out if some scenes can be confusing, i don“t think they will, first because when you use the journey you end up just remembering the info you wanted, and because it is all in one context, but i guess we“ll see.

Greetings

I donĀ“t know if anyone is using just movies/shows locations -As the post on the houses of simpsons,seinfeld…- . IĀ“d like to point out IĀ“ve using scenes, not houses or places, but specific memorable scenes in both movies and shows (mostly in one show); A specific show I use is ā€œThe X filesā€ without even trying after watching an episode I write down 10 scenes (I started with 25, then 20, now 10). IĀ“ve been reading posts but I didnt find any using scenes, just so you add this to your posible new journeys, itĀ“s quite easy and requires little review and time.

hmm… sometimes when i visualise i use something that i call the rat…

i move throghout buildings only alongside walls, never to cross open spaces…
it makes sequence so much more easier, i havent used this for memorising, but i think that your aproach with the movie method is great for making each surface memorable… hehe…

Hi All,

Thanks a lot for your posts. I am new to this method but I have been using Peg method for some time. I also realised through Memory Palace that why I use to remember some random stuff like-my particular thoughts/ideas/interactions when I was at some unique place and each time I visited that place I had those memories flashed back in totality.

Anyway, FOR GAVINO (anybody else is also most welcome to help) I have few Questions as I am new to this method, I hope you’ll help. Thanks in advance

1.) I tried to use the method of movie scene to remember stuff. But please tell in detail how you have used a particular scene to remember stuff. (like- should we use a particular space, or characters of scene or objects/things in scene or create a story?)
Also, should we see a ā€˜static picture’ of a particular scene…i.e. in Basic Instinct’ scene should I see Sharon stone and all else static coz if I see them in movement or flow of scene and I see my information(which is to be remembered) too in movement won’t it create confusion.
please give example of ā€˜Basic Instinct’ scene you quoted above…

2.) I want to remember GK questions or information for my exam. These are not sequential, so how can I use a Memory Palace to remember different GK questions which are not linked, the main concern is if even I remember this, will I be able to recall that question’s answer whenever I want out of order or I have to follow a sequence?
(Eg question: When did lumiere brothers showcased first film? Answer: 7July, 1896)

Thanks So Much…

If you don’t have to remember the information in order, you might not need a memory palace, though you could use one if you want. Also see the thread ā€œMemorizing Multiple Choice answers adviceā€ā€¦

If you are just using a linking method, you would need a image for ā€œLumiere Brothersā€ and the answer: 7 July 1896.

You could picture the brothers with a lamp (think ā€œluminationā€), and then attach the date:

You probably don’t need an image for the 18 because an old movie that ends with 96 has to be in the 1800s, otherwise it would be 1996, which wouldn’t be an old movie.

EDIT: typos.

Hi Gavino. Patrick Bateman referred me to your MMP posts from another thread where I had sought help with my learning requirements. As a complete newbie to Memory Palaces I want to be very sure that I plan carefully and appropriately before committing.

Seems to me your nesting idea might be what I need so as to progressively add information directly related to basic facts, but with my current level of understanding I couldn’t tackle the construction of such a Massive Memory Palace at the moment. I think I need some more basic understanding of creating and using memory palaces before I tackle something like that (suggestions for reading material with detailed examples most welcome).

I hope you won’t mind if I give an example of exactly what it is I need to do and hopefully you can advise me on the suitability of the MMP method.

This is related to the theoretical (as opposed to physical practice) aspects of a Japanese martial art which has similar learning requirements to acupuncture. To give you an idea of the sort of information I need to commit to memory, here is a typical question/response from the oral part of my exam:

Q. Describe the important features of the Bladder meridian.

A. Bladder is the 7th meridian and contains 67 points. It starts at the inner corner of the eye and ends at the corner of the nail on the lateral side of the small toe. [trace path] Element: water; Polarity: yang; Striking Action: grasping; Stance: crane; Colours: blue & black; Diurnal Cycle: 3pm-5pm.

We are supposed to provide the information in exactly that order, for which I have the mnemonic EPSSCD = element polarity striking-action stance colours diurnal-cycle. I need to answer as above for each of the 12 meridians. Meridian number, number of points, start and end locations are automatic responses which I don’t need to have a mnemonic for. [trace path] means I have to finger draw the path of the meridian on a human subject. I couldn’t come up with a better way than rote memorisation for that, drawing them over and over again on images of body blanks, so I don’t need to address the actual path in the memory Palace.

Now this is the important bit as far as planning is concerned…

As it stands, none of that is very difficult to handle, but what’s got me concerned is being able to seamlessly add more and more information about each meridian as time goes by. A very important consideration is that I can in the future add new factoids that are directly related to the base item (meridian). By that I mean there will come a time when I’ll have to add other items of information such as: Sound: chu; Vertebrae: L5; and other data that I don’t even know about yet, all directly related to the Meridian.

After reading your posts on MMP it occurred to me that the 12 meridians could each be an entrance to a micro-palace where the related EPSSCD etc information would be stored.

But with no previous experience of memory palaces I don’t really have any idea how to go about this, or even if it’s a useful way to approach my requirements.

Any advice most gratefully received.

Great technique. I’ve modified mine to CMMP (Color Mobile Memory Palace). So, everything you’ve explained multiply by 10.
(by 10, I mean 0-9 or Yellow-Black). Same scene but different color/background.
It might be confusing to beginners.

Like the Dominic’s System above will be 100010 = 10,000 loci. And if I use my 3D System, it’ll be 10,00010 = 100,000 loci. Damn! Thats stagering. This is ev*l. Hehe. Love it. Thank you for sharing, Gavino.

Hey guys, I am back after a long break enforced by work and other commitments. I am afraid that I still don’t have much time for any detailed responses, so sorry Soporose, but I hope that someone else can help you.

Iam, a word of warning: I tried differentiating otherwise identical journies with colour, but found that it worked poorly and also gave me serious headaches!!

I have had more success in differentiating short journies using climatic conditions e.g. snow or torrential rain or sun-baked

But the thing about the MMP method is that you should have plenty of options for unique journies and loci before needing to reuse in this fashion.

Cheers

Gavino

I have also used Gavino’s technique to enrich a base MP with movie scenes. It is really helpful for remembering them. Then I use these movie persons and objects to memorize the data I really need to memorize. Having a Massive Memory Palace helps me to rapidly scan through the entire palace and then find the most suitable location in it for the data I want to storage.

Therefore, I usually make two different MMPs. One is in the order, which is best for the movie scenes to memorize and which I then fill with the actual data. Later I have to build the second MMP in which the locations (scenes) follow the logical path of the actual data. It is very important for me, because most of my palaces are for mathematics and physics, so they can’t be in unlogical order, or they don’t serve their real purpose (understanding science).

Of course, when I would just want to memorize all my Facebook friends, the order in which they place isn’t important.

This is a great idea! Not only does it scale really well, but it creates a natural indexing if you need to remember exactly which nr a certain loci has.

Hi gavino,

Why don’t you continue nesting your palace (like inception style). You can create a base palace with 10 rooms, in each room you may have 10 items (a picture, a tv set, a window, a door etc.) which you can open to another universe, than when you enter to that universe you can have another memory palace with 10 items.

This way you can have 10^3 =1000 loci

If you want to add more loci you can put another layer it will be 10^4 = 10.000 loci etc.

Did I get it correct, or am I missing something?

@akilligelisim: maybe it’s just that the MMP is an astounding system to index your loci - but you’ve got to come up with the loci yourself.

So, it’s not that 100,000 loci will suddenly pop up in your mind, ready to serve, if you couldn’t come up with them, while in an unorganized way, without the MMP.

The point is, coming up with 100,000 loci is not trivial, to say the very least.

That said, there’s a nesting level where the information retrieval can take too long. If you have time to spare, I see no problem. But what if you’re supposed to quickly recall the info, e.g. a telephone number or somebody’s name?

EDIT: Grammarz

I’m pretty sure inception-method-of-loci was mainstream back then. The idea is as genius as it is simple, surely someone would invent it and then communicate it via book.

Right now I have the whole Devil May Cry game remembered (with no locus separation yet), which I intend to use for storing memory palaces. Only have one though. Google Art Project museum, where every art piece is either a simple locus or a locus with a reference to the locus in another, ā€œdeeperā€ palace (or a locus that contains both readily available information and a reference) . Which is a map from Team Fortress 2. There, I’ll try to place related things close to one another.

This is an excellent bunch of posts. I would never have thought to use a movie as a way to memorise information. I am going to try this with the movie Rounders starring Matt Damon. I know ever scene of that movie and have watched it probably 50 times. I wish I was a guy who played video games as using the levels in the game as some do seems a great way to create a palace. Video games aren’t my thing sadly .

First of all thanks for all posts

If you are like me who watches a lot of movies this method may work for you too
I have been using " Olli’s PAO " and movie locations for learning vocabulary ( Olli’s PAO system is in alphabetic order.)

For example the letter ’ B ’ is between [01,05] and 01 = Ba = Barney Stinson, 02 = Ben Affleck etc.
In tv series of ’ how i met your mother ’ barney stinson is one of the characters and because of i watched the tv programme a lot, i know other main characters too and some of the places. I simply link the new words between Ba-Be into how i met your mother tv programme’s locations and other characters(+4 more characters). But the key point is every word matter, for example an apple it smells, it has colors, it can be juicy, it can be rotten… I’m trying to learn these adjectives etc. at the same time but these are the secondary objectives for me when i am learning these words and i try to group the words like objects-actions, for example: baby = object, babysitting= action bad=secondary, Barney babysitting bad babies( babies starts to cry and pee everywhere, apartment floor smells etc.) unfortunately there are drawbacks of what i am doing. Making a character to do more than 5-10 actions makes the image hard to remember(it needs more imaginary like smelling, iced apple, giant babies, unstoppable pee, extreme situations etc.) . I used ā€˜anki’ spaced repetition program for the confusion and i had no problem after that. And for other 4 characters, i don’t need to remember their name but for everyone to understand, Lily i know how she looks like, her personal type etc. i link her with other actions and objects. It’s simply BA-rney gives me the first link of words start with BA and then when i imagine Lily, i know the words i am looking for start with BA.

If you haven’t watch 100 movies names are perfectly in order that’s okay(you can’t :stuck_out_tongue: i tried). E. G. Bill Gates, he has a company called microsoft and there is Steve Jobs, it doesn’t have to be movies. There are lots of details, i hope i can write it in a one post but i have no time right now:(

While i am learning vocabulary very easily, i have no idea about the grammar and learning grammar makes me feel idiot. I really appreciate if someone can help me about the grammar, all i can do is repetition

That 's a good idea. Thank you! I have to sign in to hit the like ^^

Hi gavino, does the mini-palace have to be related to the main loci?

For example, bed > aircon > window. How do I link a mini-palace into the loci aircon if there’s nothing that reminds me of another location? I don’t know many people and a lot of PAO characters are from the same game so using them would clash.

Do you imagine an item on the main loci as a mini-palace storage point?
