Hi all. I am planning to expand my 2 digit Major system to 3 digit Major system. It all is in English, but this is my second language. I am having difficulty with such new words. So, what’s your advice for me to asap master this 3 digit system? I mean that how i should learn it to achieve the best efficency? Thanks a lot for your support.
For what it’s worth I’ll outline my process:
- Start with ten numbers. Write down the letter codes for the number for each of the ten numbers. Then create a word from them. Then select an image suggested by that word. Then create a crazy story using those ten words. Taperecord that story to listen to a couple of times later. Count exercises like situps using those words. Then I used the numbers as loci for memorizing playing cards against. That took care of the sequential learning.
Then to randomize access to the words I created flashcards and shuffled them and tested with them. Then for long-term I added them to a quiz that showed 3 random 3-digit numbers to memorize together as practice. If this is at all interesting I’d be glad to write up an example of this process.

Hi Dale. Thanks a lot for your sharing. I will try to find how it effective. Actually i have an ambition to master both Dominic & 3 digit Major system. So i make association every 3 digit number with corresponding in Dominic system. Example: Link 111 (Major) with 01 (Dominic); 102 with 22…After learning through 100s, i go to next 200s: link 201 (Major) with 01; 202 with 02…Whenver to find the image of 3 digit number, i have to go from Dominic system. It takes a little time currently. My goal is to make instant access. Plz advise if this learning way is correct?
Did you know theres a Major system dictionary published by the "Arthur Bornsten School of Memory Training. Goes up to 1000, and includes things like 0000, 001 etc. It gives a list of words that fit the major system. If you have trouble getting your hands on it, let me know.
That makes sense to me. I also like to learn a new system using an older system. At some point you can separate the two so they are independent and faster to access. Thanks for sharing your methods.

The book seems to have been published in 1956.
If you google for “Arthur Bornstein” “numerical dictionary” you may find some people who are selling it.

Yes, I found the Borenstein kit at a garage sale for a dollar. I guess they’re like gym equipment in that people buy them with good intentions and then lose their discipline.
Hi all. Waiting for your comment/review about the book… I am not sure if any intersting idea in Mr Borenstein method? Can anyone help to buy this book as Amazon give quite high price.
The Bornstein method is pretty much just a rehash of the Major System. It’s good, but it’s not unique or different. I do think the numerical dicitonary is a pretty good resource. I haven’t set out to move to 3 digits myself yet, but I think the dictionary would be a good resource. A subtle difference also is that when I learned the Major system, I pretty broke it down as being concrete noun only. Bornstein puts some verbs and descriptors and such in his dictionary so it might work for people doing subject verb object type systems. Don’t know.

Well… I think we could start a section in the Wiki page. I wouldn’t want to just scan it. I mean, you guys can see how much work it takes to put that kind of thing together. I would feel a bit bad. I normally have no ethical boundary with something silly like copyright… but out of respect for a fellow memory person… It would feel like ripping off Buzan or something. I actually think the guy tried to improve humanity etc.
How about we make a wiki section with suggested words up to 3 digits? I’ll start working on it a bit today.
Ok, any suggestions? I started a page. I thought it best to put it in a table. I broke it up by parts of speech. Do you guys think this the best organization? Should we also have a word to number section? I thought it unnecessary as if you understand the major system, you wouldn’t need to look it up.

Hi all. I’ve learnt upto 500 and doing practice daily. Some number i forget when recalling, it means that my imagination was not strong enough. Ben had explained that he made association of objects based on a certain rules. Does anyone share idea about the rule that we should make? To get the association easier and quicker?
I use Major for three digit and Dominic ¶ for 4 digits. Have no problems. In fact the system I used tells me how many digits there are.
