Enhancers to the Number Shape System

I’m currently building a number system. I’ve been reading this site, and from what I understand, the following would be a good way to do it.

I use the Major System to generate the images. It’s fairly easy to use, and I now have a list of people (in Danish) from 00-99. I’ll now begin assigning them actions and objects, I’ll further add 12 extra images needed for the face cards.

For the numbers from 0-9 I’ll try the Number Shape System, but then I came across this page: Memory Techniques - Expanding Memory Systems | AcademicTips.org - but sadly, I didn’t catch the idea behind the enhancers. Can someone explain it to me?

Do I expand the Number Shape System as such:

  1. find a shape for each image, fx 2 = swan
  2. add an object with the corresponding numerical value to the image, fx add ‘honey’ (N = 2) = a swan swimming in honey
  3. create certain images that has a “convention” meaning, that can be add to an image/number, which will then change the original value to another value

I don’t understand the value of this nor what kind of “conventions” I should add. Can someone explain it to me, maybe with examples? Also, instead of just seeing a swan, should I alway see ‘a swan swimming in honey’ instead, and why?

I think I came across it in Josh Cohens blog, when he wrote about memorizing Hamlet’s famous soliloquy, but I didn’t understand it there either.

What the text call enhancers are tags that you apply to your image.
Let’s take a random number, say 35, and your person for this is Albert Einstein (not using the major system).
If you freese him in ice, you have changed this number to 135.

The enhancers expand a 00-99 system into a 000-999 system.

Since you already have a 00-99, there is no need to apply this to a 0-9 system.

If you come up with 100 “enhancers,” if I understand what you are saying, for 00-99, you will have a faux 4-digit system, which I used for some time. Reallu, it’s just a 2 digit system that gives you something to do with each image. Now that I use a 3-digit system, I can tell you from my experience that “enhancers” like the ones you are talking about (freezing) , is just like the encoding experience you would have if you were very clear on how each image affects the images around it, so a system with a 1-digit enhancer is like using a 1.5 digit system - 2 images per 3 digits, which would slow you down compared to having either 100 enhancers or just being vey precise about the functions of your original 100 images.

I do think enhancers are a neat and even useful idea, but only if you have 100. It’s like a PA system with only ten actions. This is just my two cents. I’ve tried several variations of this idea without improving my own efficiency, but that might just be me. I don’t mean to be discouraging.
