Nice, I use a lot of D&D monsters in my systems too, mostly using illustrations from the 1980s editions.
The old classic art, like this (484 – wraith).
Edit: the wraith file was deleted from Wikipedia, so it disappeared. You can find examples of the old art by looking through the Monster Manual from 1977 or any of the AD&D first edition modules.
If there’s any interest, we could create a visual alphabet peg list based on D&D creatures in a wiki-post.
I think I’ve only played the old 1981 edition of the Basic/Expert set and the 1st edition AD&D books. Also 2nd edition, but only on a computer (Baldur’s Gate series).
Nice, I was inspired by the idea and created a couple of peg lists last night too. I want to add more, but I’m not sure how many monsters start with letters like Q and Z. I didn’t even fit in skeletons and orcs.
Good chosing the owlbear. Regarding elemental, what element?
I chose the ones with the photos that looked more medieval and I most remembered, mainly from Neverwinter Nights games.
Didn’t put jackalwhere so it wasn’t mistaken with wherewolf or other “where-whatever”.
Only found Quasit and Zombie, at least for the 1st edition. Surely there are more for Q and Z, I didn’t finish all lists. For some letters there are too much cool options and spent too much time.
I didn’t think about that yet, but probably an air elemental, since the first thing that comes to mind is an air elemental gate that is found in Baldur’s Gate II’s Underdark section. If I can fill out another set of 26, I might use fire elemental for F.
