Chewing Gum and Memory

I noticed that Michael Mirski was chewing gum during the 2012 USA Memory Championship. Could it have something to do with this study?
Chewing gum improves memory

Has anyone here tried testing themselves while chewing gum and without to compare scores?

There is a newer study from 2010 with a bigger sample (N>500) consisting of children (around twelve years old) that aimed to reproduce the cognitive improvements from previous findings. The authors also tried to eliminate methological problems from the study mentioned in the article.

The study showed a small difference in short term memory performance, with non-chewers outperforming chewers(!)

Thanks for the link.

I just tried to find the original study from the top post to see who funded it, but it doesn’t seem to be online.

A copy is available online at wrigley.com
