Can you use a memory palace more than once a day without a ghosting effect?

Is it possible to use a memory palace more than once a day with out ghosting effect ?

Could you elaborate on what you mean by this ghosting effect?

You can use memory palaces daily. And the effect you get is that the palace’s vividity and efficacy increase, as well as the agility with which you move (or zap) through it.

I assume he means using the same memory palace, the same loci, multiple times a day for different things.

So, if you attach one image to your bed, two hours pass and you attach a different image to the bed you might confuse the two. The first image would be the ghost.

I have done it when practicing, it varies. Sometimes I get ghost images and other times I don’t, it depends on how memorable the images where.

It’s better to have a few memory palaces so you can go through them in order, by the time you go back to the first one, ghost images shouldn’t be a problem.

Odd. It might be an encoding problem. I’ve never heard of nor experienced this effect.

If they’re using a short-term palace, then ghosting shouldn’t be a problem, because they’ll keep cleaning the palace back to its tabula rasa state.

Otherwise, they move to the next loci, or properly complement the pre-existing loci by incorporating one (or more) of the senses for more vividity.

I’ve seen discussions about it many times here, and I’m pretty sure people like Nelson Dellis and Anthony Metivier have talked about it when they discuss memory palaces on their videos. The concept is also repeated a lot in discussion about reusing memory palaces.

I remember reading a discussion in this forum where Katie Kermode, a well known memory athlete, said that she had around 2700 loci for competition because that’s how much she needs to not reuse any on a given (traditional) competition. The idea of not reusing them is precisely to avoid confusing the images that you placed, otherwise having that many would be a waste of time and effort.

For most people, a group in which I include myself, just thinking on deleting the images of your loci isn’t enough to completely forget them, after all the point of attaching them to loci is that they are memorable images, so a little time is needed for the images to fully fade.

It’s a little like saying “don’t think about a pink elephant with wings”, whether you wanted it or not, you probably thought about a pink elephant with wings.

Interesting. I understand. And you’re right!

But oddly enough, I just have to imagine the palace on a raging fire, the images getting reduced to ash, and then I simply blow them away using Zephyrus and add the new images. (Zephyrus is my palace-cleaner )

I just created a tag for this question because it comes up regularly: reuse-memory-palaces
