I was introduced to the world of memory via Harry Lorayne’s books (How to Develop a Super Power Memory etc.). At the time I couldn’t believe it, my mind was blown - these techniques actually worked! I learnt about link methods, substitution word methods, peg methods all through reading Lorayne. Prior to this, I had no clue about the world of memory, I just assumed memory palaces / memory feats etc. were a thing of fiction like Lecter or Sherlock, something you onlt see in the movies.
But Lorayne’s books were evidence that it was reality, that I could do it too!
Now I want to learn other systems, I want to learn how to build memory palaces.
Are there any lay-people friendly books (I loved the Lorayne style of books for the accessibility and ease of practice) for beginners you guys would recommend I start with?
I am looking to use the memory palaces for Medical subjects (anatomy, physiology, pathology etc.) It would be amazing to be able to retain information as I go along reading from textbooks!
Hi. I dont know how to use palaces well. Pi prefer link or others but palaces are pwerful. I combine link with small palaces and pegs. To study. I suggest books of Dominic obrien.
I’ll second the suggestion for a number of Dominic O’Brien’s books, as well as Solomon’s Memory Palace, Dr. Lynne Kelly’s Memory Craft, Nelson Dellis’s Remember It!, and Ed Cooke’s Remember, Remember.
Because of your interest in medical memorization, you may also want to look at Alex Mullen’s website (I believe its MullenMemory.com).
Hi. What system do you use usually? . You have read a lot of books. I combine story method with short palaces and draws. But I use few images and then study of other ways more cognitivo
I’m not doing anything fancy here. My main tools are memory palaces combined with the Major system for dates/numbers. For very small, temporary things—where I’m parked at the airport, for instance—I just use a linking/peg method.
