Best way to memorize English roots and stems?

I am still new to the world of memory, and having searched around the site I am a bit overwhelmed with information.

I would like to go down this list memorizing all the roots and their meanings

What would be the best way to go about this? Before learning about mnemonics I attempted to do this using an SRS and rote memorization, but failed miserably.

Along with creating a PAO system, I assigned a person, action and object to letters A-Z. I was thinking of using this PAO system to create an image spelling out the root, then place that image somewhere relevant to the meaning of the root. Because I am still a memory noob, I can’t really tell if this will work or not.

Before I set out to start memorizing, are they any other ways to go about this that might be more efficient and effective?

I would just memorize a word for each prefix/suffix/root that uses it, along with the meaning. Seems easier and simpler than encoding 1-5 letters into a complex image, and then trying to attach the meaning of the root to it.

So for example, for the root “astr” meaning star, I would imagine an astronaut on top of a star, or something?

Yeah.

Also, no need to encode those you already know.

Interesting wiki page. I just converted that table into an Anki deck, if anyone is interested. (attached)

There is also a related deck for medical prefixes and suffixes.

As a native Greek I am lucky to know all those roots since attending my greek elementary, high school and uni. However, since I studied math and sciences my Latin isn’t so good, and I was amazed to see so many Latin roots as well in that wiki page
