Just curious if anyone is willing to share their anki settings for when they were learning a three digit or two card system. If the information is already on a page here that I wasn’t able to find: A link to the page would be greatly appreciated.
I can’t recommend you numbers because my experience is that it’s better not to waste time fine-tuning Anki settings instead of actually learning (in and, most importantly, out of anki).
The only thing I’ll say is while FSRS is great for most subjects (definitely activate it! It will decrease your load substantially with no problems)…
… it’s not appropriate for drilling a PAO (you don’t want to only learn it). It’s going to give you much too big intervals when you press easy. Either don’t activate it for this deck or just use the “hard” button instead of “easy”.
By default 5 new cards a day. Do all reviews. If I feel like it I add more new cards afterwards.
If I feel bad/sick/unmotivated no new cards at all this day. But all reviews no matter what (otherwise you cumulate a huge backlog quickly).
While reviewing always press hard, except if I knew the answer instantly. If I couldn’t remember based on the sounds and had to use the memory palace I press again if the interval for hard is more than a few days.
That being said the absolute best drilling is using the system for real. That’s why I pushed myself to begin my history memory palace project even if my PAO isn’t quite finished (850/999… getting there!)… Both projects “motivate” and reinforce each other.
Also not really part of the routine (because it happens irregularly), but going through PAO drills “in your head only” is a good way to pass the time during moments that would otherwise be boring (instead of counting sheep for example)
I can’t do optimal setup the anki apps for 3 digit flashcard, I just use google sheet and flashcards(virtual), i solved that problem by another way, but i can’t share
I wouldn’t even bother with anki to begin with. Get 10 MPs with 10 loci each, place your images there. Doesn’t matter if these are 10 separate locations, 10 rooms in a house, or whatever. Just make sure they aren’t all crammed into one room.
No need to do them all at once, you can start with your 00-09. Fill it out, then look at the world around you and start translating numbers, referring back to your MP as necessary.
If you have any particular images you’re fond of that aren’t sticking after a while, you could try making them more specific (ex: instead of just Santa Clause, you’re using Tim Allen’s Santa Clause, or the one from the Rudolph claymation) and you can try doodling it out. Drawing is very powerful I’ve found, the quality of the image doesn’t matter much, just the meaning and intention behind it.
Yes, drawing is awesome and helps a lot (even if your drawings are “bad”).
And practice in real situations is the best.
Anki is more to fill the gaps: it happens than some numbers don’t come up irl as often as they should and you’d not review them enough… with a 2-digit PAO not so much, but with 3-digits? 1 chance out of 999 that the number comes up? Yeah you need additional “artificial” drilling. Especially if you want some speed. If you don’t have time constraints then it doesn’t matter
