A few questions from a beginner with mind palace

  1. Does the mind palace have to be a representation of a place or an image, and does this representation change depending on the amount of things I want to remember?
  2. Can I no longer reuse a mind palace for a different topic? Or can I delete or reset the mind palace to its original state and use it again?
  3. Must the mind palace be a place with an equivalent number of reference points (loci) to the amount of objects I want to remember? For example, if my bedroom only has a bed, a desk, and notebooks, would this space not work for remembering a list of 100 items?
  4. Does the place or image I want to use as a mind palace have to cover the entire room? If I wanted to remember a specific image, wouldn’t it be enough to just place that image like a poster or wallpaper on the wall of one of the rooms in my house, for example?

  1. The mind palace is a representation of a place. This place has loci which do not change. You place images at the loci. The images are what change depending on what you want to remember. If you want to remember more images you would continue moving through the palace to the next loci.

  2. For short term storage you would reset the same palace. For long term storage you would want to use a new palace.

  3. You can put multiple images aka items per loci, however most people do 1-3. So 3 loci is not going to work for 100 images. There are many ways of arranging your loci. I personally have 10 loci per room and they are set out in a geometric way then I have three images per loci and a 3 digit system. That’s 30 images or 90 numbers per room. The reason I do it like this instead of haphazardly is so that I don’t introduce the possibility of overlooking a loci when attempting to recall the palace.

  4. The image doesn’t have to cover an entire room. It would generally be at a loci like your bed or the closet. A poster can work but it is one of the most forgettable because it doesn’t interact with the environment. There are not really any rules when it comes to memorization, there are only guidelines.

Hi. I don’t know much how to use it. But i understand it’s like a real room. You put one thing in the locus. If want more Things You have to unite or compress. You can use the loci you want. And is better with interaction. A poster only is weak I guess. The palace not change. That’s the power it has. You know it as your own house.
