Hi Folks,
I’d like to examine a particular problem as an example of what can be accomplished through memory techniques. My basic question here is
a) How would you accomplish this task?
or
b) What are some effective methods that could be employed?
In other words, I’m looking for some specific ideas here. I don’t mind if different people bring different ideas to the table, or if they contradict one another. I know that there may not be one definitive method. But I’m looking for hints as to how one could go about this task. Personal experience with such problems, or methods that have been applied to similar problems will be helpful to consider.
The task:
-Memorize, in order, the 108 major protagonists from the Chinese classic novel Outlaws of the Marsh (also known as Water Margin). These protagonists have a clearly defined ranking, and they can be divided into a higher order, the 36 stars of Heavenly Spirits, and a lower order, the 72 stars of Earthly Fiends.
-For each protagonists, remember: Their Chinese Name, Their Nickname, One or more “major narrative facts.”
(It’s noteworthy here that the “nicknames” already serve a mnemonic function. The author clearly assumed that readers could become confused by the complex narrative and large array of characters without giving each a memorable image such as “Dry Land Crocodile,” or “The Master Hand.”)
-Be able to recall the data in a variety of ways, so as to answer such questions as:
- What was the nickname of Ling Zhen? (Answer: “The Heaven-Shaking Thunder”)
- What was the Chinese name of “The Suppressor of Three Mountains”? (Answer: Huang Xin)
- What was the rank of Wu Song? (Answer: 14th Heavenly Spirit)
- Who was the 29th Earthly Fiend? (Answer: Li Gun a.k.a. “The Flying Divinity”)
- Who uprooted a tree in a temple garden? (Answer: Sagacious Lu)
- What is a major narrative fact about “Beautiful Beard?” (Answer: He was responsible for the son of a prefect, when the child was kidnapped at a fireworks festival and murdered).
Note: The ranking of characters is clearly established, but the Romanized spelling of names will differ between translations, as will the nicknames. Some characters may have more than one Chinese name, or variations in the nicknames used. To simplify the task, I can rely on one source for the list of names and nicknames. I’m electing to use the Sidney Shapiro translation, which I’ve personally read. In my next post, I’ll present a list of basic starting data.
