1. MAA US Memory Open

Very weird events…I really like the XMT-rules style of penalty-free memorization. It’s a whole different side to speed memorization that is totally lacking in the traditional championships

Good of you to leave out blind-solving for now, too. All of those events above are 100% memory based, exactly as they should be. I sent a message to USAMC mediators about 6 months ago saying, “Since the rules of your double-deck tie-breaker that require the memorizing and recalling from the back of the deck were established, it has become the norm among athletes to memorize from the face of the deck. I’m not even sure that there is anyone out there left who memorizes from the back of the deck that is even able to memorize 2 decks in 5 minutes, so the rule is now just an impediment to the athletes that is irrelevant to memorization skills.” The e-mail back said, “having to go to a tie breaker at all would be highly unusual, so this is an added challenge.” I wanted to reply, “If you soaked the cards in syrup and let them sit over night, it would be even more of a challenge!” But of course I would not  In short, thanks for staying true to memory!

That is a lot of money that you have to raise. How much is admission into the championship?

Thank you, it feels good so far. There were so many ideas but in the end it became something better than originally planned.

We still need some money, mainly for the new events. Admission is not set yet, but there will be some. We will also limit the amount of competitors for now, because we need to plan ahead. It is too difficult to predict how many would come, so we will only allow 30 competitors for this one.

We will also very likely cancel the WCA event as well and just do cubing as sideevents. There is always room for more next time. But we want to make it good now.

This all sounds really great. When/where would we be able to register? Seems like the number of open spots will run out quickly!

Registration opens as soon as we have found the location, when we can set the date.

I hope we fill all our spots.

How many images will be given total in the AI discipline?

Enough to break the world record, normally 20% more. That would be ~600 AIs.

That goes for all disciplines except Spoken Numbers and Speed Cards. In Spoken Numbers I think it will be 100/200 (1st/2nd attempt). Only at the World Memory Championship you get the third attempt with 400 digits. And Speed Cards obviously is always the same amount.

I saw earlier that there was a link to a video promoting the event

But I cant find it now?

Does anyone have that video?

Thanks
Ray

I found the link
it was in my email

Here is the link, it is a must watch!

Awesome job Flauwy

Nice to see some variety in the events!!

Some one said they might have cancelled this event?

Is that true?

Yeah unfortunately it is. Hopefully it’ll happen next year though. Flauwy said he’d have to postpone it til 2015 because he couldn’t raise enough money.

Hi everyone,

the fundraising created $815 which is good but not enough to cover it at the moment. I will still proceed with the plans but invest my private money into it. I will also try to find some other sponsors. At this rate it is unrealistic to hold it in November. Therefor I will move into early 2015 to get a bit more time to save more money.

Don’t worry: The MAA Open will happen, just a bit later now. I will keep you posted about my plans.

Thank you to all participants.

Though disappointed I am still thankful that you’ve gone through the trouble to do this. Can’t wait to hear more about it.

Seconded

For those who are interested and haven’t heard, there’s talk among the higher powers (ie. Florian, Simon, etc.) of having the MAA Open in the days immediately after the 2015 XMT (so competitors, especially international ones, can make one trip to the California instead of two). Nothing definite yet, but thought ppl might like to know

Haha, I love how rumors spread. I just mentioned that in the internal MAA group on Facebook but this is not a secret, so let’s go out on the open:

I thought a lot about that and I believe that it would be extremly beneficial for the MAA Open to have international athletes in the area thanks to the XMT. So I would like to host the MAA Open within a few days/ one week tops of the XMT 2015. Simon Reinhard preferred having it AFTER the XMT, so that they don’t ruin their precious journeys for the XMT. And I understand that, the XMT is just so promising that it would be priority No. 1 for international athletes.

I also don’t think that the MAA Open would be in the shadow of the XMT but rather go hand-in-hand with it. Having three top events like this in one area within a few days would just be an amazing opportunity for everyone, including all US athletes coming from different states. They would probably not visit the XMT as a spectator but this way they could actually consider coming in person to San Diego and compete at my events a few days later in LA or nearby.

I contacted a bunch of US athletes to help me out with a location. Luis Angel lives in Orange County and can hopefully pull some strings. Everyone else is also invited to ask for a free location in a university, public place, hotel, convention center or whatever. We need at least a medium sized room plus a small room for the arbiters. More would be better. We need the location for two days in a row.

Guys, I LOVE this plan, so let’s all work together and make it happen. You can privately contact me via my email [email protected].

I look forward to beating Simon at the MAA since he’ll most likely be drinking top-dollar champagne all day every day for the week prior to it.

But in all seriousness…he’d destroy me either way. Simon, Simon, Simon…how do you do it?

Ok, it is official now:

The MAA US Memory Open takes place in LA on May 9 and 10. I will update all infos on the entry post on page 1 soon.

You can register by writing a mail at [email protected]. If you are on Facebook please join the event page (no official registration, just for an overview):

I believe you are mistaken about the way spoken digits are handled in Nation Standard championships these days. Jonas set the current spoken digits record of 380 at the 2014 Swedish Memory Championship
shown here. So there were more than 300 digits given that day.

And in keeping with what you’ve said about total amounts set at ~120% of the current world record, the spoken digits given in the three attempts at the WMC were 100, 300, 450. At the moment, I can’t confirm whether there were three or only two spoken digit attempts at the Swedish Memory Championship, nor their quantities. In order to maintain fairness across championships, it is crucial to learn these details before finalizing the events.

Hi all,

The three attempts at the WMC were 200, 300, 450. Rationale for the 450 was that it should be about 120 % of the previous world record, recall time being 25 minutes. Furthermore, I think it makes sense if the world record can be potentially beaten every time a discipline is done. This would leave 100 and 450 or 200 and 450, provided that only two attempts are planned (which is, as far as I know, not fixed in the rules but is up to the discretion of the organizer at the “smaller” Standard tournaments). A solution for beginners and experienced competitors alike might be three attempts and 100, 200/300, 450.
