I just tried and confirmed, I believe Hannes can able to do that same task in 9 minutes or less
and interesting thing it will cost only 2 loci (or stories) per set.

so 6 set => 9 × 6 => 54 minutes (let’s say sometimes he hesitate for some digits, sneeze anything can happen.)

85/6 => 14 hours almost, he can finish it.
by just going at 6am in the morning, and end at 8 pm or let’s say 9 pm.

but the real problem is, after each level pass the pressure will be more that if did a mistake then everything is gone. So need that confident till the last 85 set…

Not sure if 14 is any better than 17, but sure… for all I care the number can be 14 instead.

What’s with the loci stuffing… are you short on memory palaces? I use 4 loci for a sequence of 32, with two 3-digit images per loci. I encode 4 lights into 3 digits and use 256 unique images rather than the 64 you and some others were suggesting. I can post my system separately when I find the time.

That’d be true for any record where the first mistake would end the attempt. No different from what he did in the video actually. The real issue is that you don’t know where you are in the sequence in case your mind starts to wonder mid-sequence, which can happen after 14 hours. With speed cards you’d have the cards in front of you and with all other events you’d have your written down sequence in front of you… on a Simon, you can’t see the last light(s) you’ve pressed. And since it’s so awfully repetitive you’ve typed that particular 3-digit image maybe 12-15 times already, just not sure anymore if it was this round or last round… and there’s no way for you to check.

Imagine we did speed cards like this. The arbiter shows you the first card, you put that card down. Both pick up their card. Arbiter now shows you first and second, you put two down. Both pick up their cards. Then three, then four, etc. until you reach the 52nd card. The whole time the arbiter does not shuffle the cards and you’re looking at the same deck over and over again in an n+1 fashion. Instead of doing 52 once, you do all the partials up to 52 as well.

Imagine doing 2 decks in the 10 minute cards event. That’s 104 items and I think Hannes had 102 or 103 in the video, so virtually the same. Normally, 2 decks in 10 mins and 20 mins recall is not an issue for most competitors, many do more than just two decks. It took Hannes over an hour in the video because you’d be in a situation as above where it’s 1 card, 2, 3, …, 101, 102, 103, and finally the last sequence of 104 cards. I can more than understand why he was getting annoyed in the video with how repetitive the game was.

Like I said, I got 8 lights per loci, so 13 loci x 8 lights per loci = 104 light for me. The average PAO user needs 17 loci for a deck of cards. That’s basically what we’re looking at with Hannes’ “record” in the video. To beat just 84, I’d get 88 with only 11 loci, so that can’t be right. On the other hand, 4 loci for each sequence is 4 x 85 = 340 loci to beat the actual record. That be 20 decks of cards for the average PAO user 17 x 20 = 340, which makes much more sense than just 11 loci. Again, it’s 84 sequences of 32 lights and not a sequence of 84 lights. That discipline does not exist… and if it did, you’d max out because of boredom not due to memory issues.

Can you memorize 1,000+ cards? Sure, people do 20 decks and more all the time in 1 hour cards events. Imagine you had to do it in the Simon style… to come full circle to your guys’ “number of touches” discussion… it’s not a memory palace issue… it’s gameplay issue.

I actually looked into breaking the record when it became obvious in 2020 that Corona restrictions would be around for a while. The then record of 15 sequences meant, just start a new sequence every 15 minutes, which gives you 4 an hour and you’d have the 16 required to beat the record after 4 hours. Maybe do an extra hour to get to an even 20. I was at around 10 minutes give or take a little per sequence, so that was with a nice little break to loosen up between sequences.

You can imagine, I was slightly annoyed when I saw the new record at 84 instead of 15 merely a few months later. I for one am not going to sit there for 14-17 hours just to beat that record. So unless they allow a modified version where you’d get 8, repeat 8, next 8, repeat 16, next 8, repeat 24, next 8, repeat 32… done, next sequence… repeat 84 more times… I don’t think I’ll make any attempts at this record with the current n+1 style of new data to memorize.

But the whole thing is much less challenging than an hour card event. Because you don’t have to memorize 85 sequences and then repeat all 85. You essentially do 85 sessions of speed cards memo/recall back-to-back… when you’re on the 3rd deck, you don’t need to know anymore what was in decks 1 or 2. Essentially, just a full day long speed cards training session that you take slowly with accuracy over speed, so maybe 2-3 minutes if you usually do it in 30 second or say 5 minutes if you usually do it in 2-3 minutes.

When I put 4, 5 objects in 1 loci. I get more accuracy compared to 6 digits per loci. (I don’t get very best speed though but accuracy is very great.)

that’s not the case, atleast for me. it’s not just 64 images. there are multiple images for just each 3 digit, since it’s based on phonetic and timing isn’t the issue. there are many images can be made on the spot.
just like words event where you get random words.

I convert three lights in 1 image. and placed 5 images in each loci (15 lights ) until that I just keep 1, 2 digits in my short term memory, when it reaches 3 , I make image for it and connect it to the locus.

there are 16 combinations of colours in pairs, and then we can put 16 contents in each set. based on phonetics, randomly or make a category out of it.

red + green => 4 (animals)
blue + yellow => G , because g comes at 7th position In alphabetical order

so it represents Goat, there are variety of choices, like guppy, gorilla, goose…

2.blue red red green

blue + red => 5 (musical instruments)
red + green => D, because it comes at 4th position.

and so on…

Much less complicated. I’ll write it up separately, but it’s similar to a 2-card system with blocks like the shadow system for example, so…

etc. so that it’s only 8 instead of 16 pairs. That way you get one digit from the first pair and one digit from the second pair. The last digit is the bitmask value 0…3 that tells you if T was green/red or red/green in either of the two pairs. Gives you 8 x 8 x 4 = 256 3-digit values, which means much less repetition than a 64 values system.

First digit tells me if either of the pairs is flipped. Similar to hearts/diamonds in shadow system, then it’s first pair followed by second pair. First location would be an image representing 219 & 141 which gives me: red green blue yellow blue red red green. If the second one also started with N, so NRT instead of TRT, it’d be red blue green red instead.

well, it maybe worked for you great. but I feel the variable loci factor not good that’s why I jumped to new way and used numbers instead.

I don’t have variable loci… I use the first digit for that instead. How did you do yours if you tried with variable loci length? You don’t have the ace of spades and the seven of hearts, you just have spades/hearts, so the 1 from the suit pair only, not the 1 for the ace and not the 7 either. Did you just make up the rest of the two cards?

this pair is start with the left side, so we will put images continuously on the loci unless an image came that started with the right side.

Not sure I fully understand why the second pair is two digits long, but since the pure digit system is working better for you anyways… mine’s a bit different from what you’re doing. We both have our systems for Simon that work for us.

I guess my conclusion here is this… everyone who’s commented here and who’s been using mnemonics had no problem whatsoever to get to 32 and that’s all that is required. I don’t think it’s hard to get 32 correct and I don’t think it’s hard to keep beating the game over and over.

Beating this record is a pure matter of stamina. The task is not hard but tedious and time consuming. Like I said…

…it’s not like speed cards where you’re trying to get a good time on top of it and start messing up because you get too close to your own limit. It’s basically just casually strolling through a 4 loci memory palace in an n+1 fashion, so virtually impossible to mess up. After recall, you just start over from the beginning.

It’s very much if there was a record that required you to solve a Rubik’s cube 840 times. I mean, even if you take all the time in the world, a minute should be reasonable and there’s really no way you can mess up the solve. So basically, you’ll be able to do 60 cubes a minute, and after 14 hours you’ll be at 840. Only way to fail would be a DNF because your cube fell apart during the solve… unlikely but not impossible.

The problem with this record is that you don’t have to remember 85 sequences and then solve 85 sequences. You have to remember only one sequence and then solve one sequence. After that it’s a clean slate and you start over… one sequence, one solve, and forget all about it again. The problem is the task doesn’t get any harder at all… other than you slowly getting more and more tired… but then you might as well go for the record of longest hours without sleep.

Question is if they accepted it if you said, let’s do 8 hours a day with a max of 2 hours break time in between, which would get you 30 solves at 5 solves an hour… and then we just continue day after day with these 8 hour days until a mistake is made. (Record beat by the end of day 3.)

Hey everyone, We love the Simon game at home too! My son is the current Simon Guiness World record holder, having completed 84 sequences. I personally got 8 sequences lol. My son actually went on to beat the Simon game (100) but we didn’t get that one on video unfortunately.

amazing indeed, I might have died by boredom if I had tried that. I accidentally came across this challenge again, and this time it felt even easier than before. In the past mostly I was using 2 digit system. now it feels even more easier with 3 digit. and ofcourse insanely boring, because you are not going to lose.
Isn’t previous record was also 84 sequence.
