Yesterday I went on a date with a girl I met on Tinder, and I memorized 20 open-ended questions as a tool for making conversation, (she’s very shy) and mind you, it worked out really well. Since I had prepared beforehand I didn’t have to sweat it that I would run out of things to say.

Also, whenever I’ve had to confront someone about something I’ve found myself making a list with favorable arguments and answers to counter-arguments, and then memorizing it using the method of loci. Have any of you done this kind of thing before? What do you use your “super memory” in real life for?

Good idea. I’ve been meaning to memorize conversation starters.

That’s awesome! Back before I got married and was dating a lot I had about 100 awesome ice-breaker questions (most of them were “would you rather” questions) that I memorized and were killer for dates.

Love it! I done something similar where I would memorize all the information about the woman when I would talk to her so I could use it later to plan a date or make conversation. What were the questions you memorized? I might want to use them to talk to random people I see just to test the memory plus interaction of real life haha

I’ll have to try this once my divorce is final.

Great idea about the open ended questions.
However, I wouldn’t try memorizing arguments and counter arguments. It’s better to sharpen the thinking skills involved in argumentation, although, of course mnemonics would help (for example memorizing the formal fallacies)

@Parkouristx These are some of the questions I memorized. I’ve got all of them from a website (don’t know if I can say the name of it here). Here they are :

If time and money weren’t a problem, what would you like to do?

What’s your favorite book?

What’s your favorite movie?

Who is your favorite entertainer (comedian, musician, actor, etc.)?

What’s your favorite way to waste time?

Do you have any pets? What are their names?

Where did you go last weekend? What did you do?

What are you going to do this weekend?

How do people call you? Do you have any nickname?

What did you do on your last vacation?

What was the last time you worked incredibly hard?

Are you very active of do you prefer to just relax in your free time?

What do you usually do when you hang out with your friends?

Who is your oldest friend? Where did you meet them?

What’s the best / worst thing about your work / school?

What were you really into when you were a kid?

If you could have any animal as a pet, what animal would you choose?

What three words best describe you?

What would be your perfect weekend?

What were you like in high-school and? In which ways have you changed since then?

@climbformemory Love the ‘‘would you rather’’ questions, wish I had thought of that!

@Celtic

Hi Celtic. What you say makes a lot of sense, but I consider myself a slow thinker, which means that I often can only come up with convincing arguments and insights if I reflect on the matter beforehand. Not sure if there’s any way to improve that.

Hi Mage.
I think you, and most anyone, can improve their thinking skills, it only requires practice. Well, and interest and motivation 🙂
Knowing the fallacies would be a good step, since, if you have some facility with them, they will alert you as to whether their arguments are unsound, invalid, or both; irrespective of the subject of the argument.

But, I get your point, and agree: gaining insight into an issue is more that identifying logical issues. You can, of course, re-engage on the same topic, “I was thinking about our last discussion…”

I caught up with a bunch of friends for a long lunch after many years of not seeing them. Before the event I made a list of topics to chat with them about. It worked out really well.
