#1
  • Re-learning card system (built system in ArtOfMemory software)
  • Re-learning first original MP
  • One pass in Memory League training: A[9 * (5c / 10s)] + B[1 * (8c / 18s)]
  • Result: A[not always making mnemonic links; too fast; relying on natural memory]
  • Result: B[1 card recog error: was 3♥, saw 6♥]

#2
  • Re-learning card system
  • Re-learning first original MP (first home)
  • Building second MP (home) using Mnemo Route app
  • One pass in Memory League training: A[9 * (5c / 15s)] + B[1 * (8c / 20s)]
  • Result: A[time enough for mnemonic links; but 2 card recog errors, nevertheless: was Q♦ , saw Q♥; was 10♦ , saw 10♥]
  • Result: B[OK]

#3
  • Re-learning card system
  • First original MP (first home) learned
  • First pass in Memory League training: A[52c in 3’32" / no rev / rec in 4’]
  • Second pass in Memory League training: B[9 * (5c / 15")] + C[1 * (8c / 20")]
  • Result: A [OK], B & C [try 5c / 12" tomorrow]
  • Slow: 5♥

#4
  • Re-learning card system
  • Building second MP (home) using Mnemo Route app: 65 loci already; will try 104
  • First pass in Memory League training: A[52c in 3’08" / no rev / needed more than the allowed 4’, but recalled it all in around 5’]
  • Second pass in Memory League training: B[9 * (5c / 12")] + C[1 * (8c / 20")]
  • Result: No errors, but taking too long to recall; must create better image-loci links; slow to remember cards, in general
  • Slow: 8♥

#5
  • Re-learning card system
  • Building second MP (home) using Mnemo Route app: 81 loci
  • First pass in Memory League training: A[52c in 2’45" / no rev / needed more than the allowed 4’, and I was too far to complete without physical cards; to keep using the software in this low level of performance I should do two half-deck passes; I am going too fast in the memorization step and visualizations/links are not strong enough]
  • Second pass in Memory League training: B[7 * (7c / 17")] + C[1 * (10c / 25")]
  • Result: A [incomplete, but all recalled were correct], B [3 full errors by complete carelessness in creating links], C [OK]
  • Slow: 6♦ versus 6♠

#6
  • Re-learning card system
  • First pass in Memory League training (using stopwatch): A[3 * 17c]
  1. failed
  2. 17c / (53", 44", 36") (memorization, review, recall)
  3. 17c / (45", 28", 38")
- Second pass in Memory League training: B[9 * (5c / 10")] + C[1 * (8c / 20")] - Result: A [first with incomplete memorization, other two good], B & C [OK] - Slow: A♠, 3♥ versus 6♥; 10♦ versus 10♥

#7
  • Re-learning card system
  • First pass in Memory League training (using stopwatch): A[3 * 17c]
  1. 17c / (1'05", 53", 36")
  2. 17c / (55", 41", 50"): 1 error (negligently ignored last card)
  3. 17c / (42", 52", 1'48"): finished review with two holes; ended up recalling correctly after long time (weak links 6♣8♥)
- Second pass in Memory League training: B[9 * (5c / 10")] + C[1 * (8c / 18")] - Result: A [lapses], B & C [OK, one difficulty with 8♥ too] - Slow: 8♥

#8
  • Re-learning card system
  • First pass in Memory League training (using stopwatch): 3 * 17c
  1. 17c / (46", 28", 40")
  2. 17c / (49", 41", 2'): 1 miss since review + 1 error (negligently ignored last card)
  3. 17c / (45", 41", 1'): 1 error (negligently ignored last card)
- Result: Must pay attention to last card! - Second pass in Memory League training: 2" / card * (5 + 6 + 6 + 7 + 6 + 5 + 5 + 5 + 7) [natural MP clusters] - Result: Saw 9♦ instead of 9♥ at 2nd locus of 7th run, but realised by the 3rd locus, changed image, lost time and concentration, resulting in not forming image of 4th card and not even seeing the 5th = 2 errors; rest OK - Slow: 9♦ versus 9♥ - Comments: the ♥ suit seems to be the most problematic so far
  • Finished preliminary new (home) MP: 104 loci
  • Third pass in Memory League training: 8 * 13c in new MP
  1. 13c / (33", 21", 30")
  2. 13c / (32", 23", 32")
  3. 13c / (33", 29", 34")
  4. 13c / (29", 15", 24")
  5. 13c / (35", 23", 25")
  6. 13c / (31", 29", 2'46"); forgot one in review and skipped a locus; then took a long time to brute-force recall, ending up with zero errors
  7. 13c / (34", 33", 2'01"); as expected, path of this section is too complicated; skipped a locus in memorization, causing confusion when memorizing last card; when reviewing, could not remember second-to-last; when recaling, first skipped a locus (another one) and recalled many cards at the wrong place, realized it, corrected it, then took a long time brute-forcing that second-to-last card; eventually, zero errors
  8. 13c / (31", 30", 34") forgot one but decided to stop anyway instead of using brute force= 1 error
- Result: avg of 2.48/c in the new MP compared to 2.74/c in the old, around 10% faster. This is due to the novelty of the MP helping images become memorable, in spite of the need to create totally new links. Last two 13c sections have poor direction; should possibly try to stream-line them. But, overall, loci are OK.

#9
  • Re-learning card system
  • First pass in Memory League training (using stopwatch): 3 * 17c
  1. 17c / (42", 1'17", 46"): 1 miss in review, tried a long time but decided to go for recall; eventually recalled correctly = zero errors
  2. 17c / (37", 1'17", 4'04"): 1 recog error (saw 6♦, was 5♦) + 1 full miss = 2 errors (long time to review/recall!)
  3. 17c / (32", 1'1", 1'): 1 recog error (saw 10♦, was 10♥) + 1 loci swap = 3 errors (long time to review/recall!)
- Result: Pushed the speed up and lost quality, but that's OK.
  • Second pass in Memory League training: 2" / card * (5 + 6 + 6 + 7 + 6 + 5 + 5 + 5 + 7) [natural MP clusters]

  • Result: 7.84/10, 12/12, 11.2/12, 9.8/14 (2 miss), 9/12 (1 recog error: saw K♥, was 8♥), 6.4/10, 5.3/10 (1 recog error: saw 10♥, was 10♦), 6.8/10, 11.47/14

  • Comments: 10♦ versus 10♥ and 8♥ must be changed. K♥ should probably be changed as well.

  • Third pass in Memory League training: 2 * 13c in new MP

  • 13c / (29", 34", 28")
  • 13c / (28", 28", 30"); 1 loci swap + 1 error = 2 errors
  • (no more time...)

#10
  • Re-learning card system: changed images of cards 8♥, 10♥ and K♥. Let’s see how it goes…
  • First pass in Memory League training: 8 * 13c in new MP

13c / (30", 31", 56"); 1 miss in review until I finally recalled it = 0 errors
13c / (29", 18", 50"); I recalled all well but made mistake when handling the software, so lost some time
13c / (29", 14", 22");
13c / (36", 22", 28");
13c / (23", 17", 21");
13c / (26", 38", 54"); I skipped the fifth locus, so stopped memorizing before the last card = 1 error
13c / (28", 17", 28"); took quite a while to recognize K♥
13c / (28", 21", 23"); slow A♥

  • Second pass in Memory League training: 3 * 17c in original MP

17c / (35", 27", 40"): 1 error
17c / (36", 35", 1’13"): 1 miss during review, but ended up recalling after a long time
17c / (29", 24", 29’): Nice

  • Result: Pushed the speed up with little quality lost. Last run best ever (based on average per card, 52 = 1’29").

#11
  • Re-learning card system: changed images of cards 8♥, 10♥ and K♥.

  • First pass in Memory League training: 2" / card * (6 + 7 + 5 + 6 + 7 + 8 + 8 + 9 + 10 + 12 + 26) [increasing natural MP clusters in new MP]

  • Result: No errors up to last; not enough time; 5 last unseen, but all others correct

  • Second pass in Memory League training: 52c in original MP

  • Result: (2’07", 1’15", 6’10"), 5 errors. Must not use memory league software for recall until I am sure to be under 4’; should write down cards and use external stopwatch only; to see the 4’ ending stresses me too much and afterwards I can’t move the cards anymore. Good result anyway; should keep training with less than 52 cards and keep pushing the speed.

#12
  • Re-learning card system.

  • First pass in Memory League training: 2" / card * (6 + 7 + 5 + 6 + 7 + 8 + 8 + 9 + 10 + 12 + 26) [increasing natural MP clusters in new MP]

  • Result: No errors up to last; 2 errors only, but one of them was weird: when I reached a given locus I for some reason thought I had skipped it while memorizing, but in truth I hadn’t; that made me locate all subsequent images at the wrong loci, which in competition would mean many errors but not for my training purposes; I consider it as 1 (weird) error + the other was wrongly recalling K♦ when I had memorized K♠ correctly

  • Second pass in Memory League training: 52c in first section of new MP

  • Result: (1’56", 2’34", 7’02"), 4 errors. I did recall using pen and paper this time, but memorization wasn’t good enough so review was faulty and recall took a long time. Memorization speed was great, though.

  • Comments: I am really tired after a long day and a poor night. I trust a good day might put me in the 2’ realm soon (which is amazing!); I am still slow with the new cards, especially 10♥.

#13
  • Re-learning card system.

  • First pass in Memory League training: 2" / card * (6 + 7 + 5 + 6 + 7 + 8 + 8 + 9 + 10 + 12 + 26) [increasing natural MP clusters in new MP]

  • Result: Again, saw 10♦, but was 10♥. Also, saw 10♣, but was 10♦. I guess I’ll have to change 10♦ too. Last 26c run was 2c short and I skipped locus #98 when recalling; it has always been a bad locus, will try to change. Total = 4 errors + 2 not seen = bad.

  • Second pass in Memory League training: 52c in old MP

  • Result: (1’52", 2’52", 7’50"), 7 errors. Must stop creating “rational” links: they must ALWAYS be visual.

#14
  • Re-learning card system.

  • First pass in Memory League training: 2" / card * (6 + 7 + 5 + 6 + 7 + 8 + 8 + 9 + 10 + 12 + 26) [increasing natural MP clusters in new MP]

  • Result: Must practice the MP itself, especially the last 26 loci. 5 errors in the last run.

  • Second pass in Memory League training: 52c in old MP

  • Result: (1’53", 0’00", 9’41"), 2 errors. I went directly to writing down the images without first trying to mentally recall them (I simply forgot to do so), and that probably made it too slow. Still many weak links.

  • Comments: 5♦ slow;

#15
  • Re-learning card system.

  • First pass in Memory League training: 2" / card * (6 + 7 + 5 + 6 + 7 + 8 + 8 + 9 + 10 + 12 + 26) [increasing natural MP clusters in new MP]

  • Result: Only 1 error in the last run; I still have to rush in the end, but I am getting better.

  • Second pass in Memory League training: 52c in old MP

  • Result: (2’05", 0’00", 4’35", 4’18"), 4 errors. I went directly to writing down the images without first trying to mentally recall them again; in fact, I don’t know if I should try to mentally review first - must test. The first recall time was writing down the cards immediately after memorizing; I got 8 holes after doing so. The second recall time is by going through the Memory League software; after seeing the remaining cards I was able to fill 4 of the holes and guess the rest, hence the remaining 4 errors.

#16
  • Re-learning card system.

  • First pass in Memory League training: 2" / card * (6 + 7 + 5 + 6 + 7 + 8 + 8 + 9 + 10 + 12 + 26) [increasing natural MP clusters in new MP]

  • Result: Zero errors; I still have to rush in the end, but I am getting better.

  • Slow: 5♥

  • Second pass in Memory League training: 52c in old MP

  • Result: (2’10", 3’24", 3’31"), 1 swap at the last 3 cards = 2 errors. I should definitely keep doing the mental review before trying to recall the cards; by doing so, I have much more chance to complete recall in the software within the allowed 4’.

  • Memory League Standard: 31c in 60s; 1c to reach Level 8.

#17
  • Re-learning card system.

  • First pass in Memory League training: 2" / card * (13 + 13 + 13 + 13 + 13 + 13 + 26) [13c divisions in new MP]

  • Result: Zero errors; I didn’t have to rush in the end for the first time. “Old man’s house” locus still problematic to remember, for some reason…

  • Second pass in Memory League training: 52c in old MP

  • Result: Interrupted. Failed attempt. No more time to practice.

#18
  • Because of the interruption earlier today, I decided to give it a shot again just now. I did no warm-up but a couple of visualization runs using a physical deck. I then tried a full deck 3 times using all my available loci: first my 52-card old MP, then my 104-card new MP;

  • Result:

  1. First pass: So many errors after a 1'30" run and so slow recalling that I didn't even bother to take note of anything
  2. Second pass: I insisted right after the previous run and got 10 errors in around 2'; I didn't bother to take note either
  3. Third pass: I insisted again (steaming!), using the second half of my new MP (the most problematic portion of my MPs), and then....

YES!!! I am very happy! Sometimes, persistence pays off…

I know I should experience some “reversion to the mean” in the next days, but it definitely boosts confidence.

I deserve my Malbec now…

P.S.: mental review - 1’54"; recall - I was done with more than a minute left but was in doubt with respect to the third and fourth-to-last cards (Q♠, J♦): I decided to swap them in the last seconds and… Voilà! My hands still hurt after the punches on the table…
