Remembering characters in novels; how would you solve it?

Some novels, such as Crime and Punishment, and some series, such as A Song of Ice and Fire, have hundreds of characters.

If you were to use a method that doesn’t affect reading speed all that much, how would you memorize the characters as you meet them throughout the books?

Memory palaces/journeys are good for lists.

I would probably try to memorize the names in advance from lists on the Internet. That way the memory palaces could be organized well – all of the people from one family or group could go in one room or area of a palace.

If not memorizing them in advance, I would probably just add them to a memory palace as they appeared in the book.
