Persevere

#21
  • Warm-up: 3’ of card visualization runs using Memory League software and the metronome set to 80bpm; 2’ of MP visualizations with the metronome set to 112bpm.

  • First pass in Memory League training: 52c [old MP]

  • Result: failed attempt of 1’35"; full of ghosts from last night; I need to stop using this MP for a while…

  • Second pass in Memory League training: 52c [new MP]

  • Result: 0 errors, 52c / (1’30", 2’02", 1’39"):

  • Third pass in Memory League training: 52c [new MP]

  • Result: 1 error, 52c / (1’28", 1’47", 1’53"): one careless swap of the second and third-to-last cards.

#22
  • Warm-up: 6’ of card visualization runs using Memory League software and the metronome set to 80bpm; 5’ of MP visualizations with the metronome set to 112bpm.

  • First pass in Memory League training: 52c [old MP]

  • Result: 3 errors, 52c / (1’38", 1’47", 2’45"): saw 6♦ instead of 10♦ (weird error) and that caused a crazy swap among 3 cards;

  • Second pass in Memory League training: 52c [new MP]

  • Result: 0 errors, 52c / (1’30", 1’50", 2’16"): when I recalled 7♥ for the second time I realized something was wrong; I had to guess which one was the correct one and ended up guessing correctly that the first 7♥ was indeed a 7♦, but took me around 20";

  • Third pass in Memory League training: 52c [new MP]

  • Result: 3 errors, 52c / (1’28", 1’42", 2’28"): swapped 3♥ and 3♦ and swapped K♠ and K♣.

  • Comment: Must warm-up more time, until I feel sharp. I am not feeling confident to push the time very much yet.

#23

#24
  • Warm-up: 8’ of card visualization runs using Memory League software and the metronome set to 80bpm; 8’ of MP visualizations with the metronome set to 112bpm.

  • First pass in Memory League training: 4 * 13c [old MP]

  • Result:

  1. 1 error, 13c / 16.7":
  2. 0 errors, 13c / 19.8":
  3. 1 error, 13c / 15.5":
  4. 0 errors, 13c / 18.8":
  • Second pass in Memory League training: 8 * 13c [new MP]
  • Result:
  1. 0 errors, 13c / 23":
  2. 3 errors, 13c / 21.4": terrible day with no concentration whatsoever; this was the deepest point so far, completely ignoring images
  3. 1 error, 13c / 16.2": I am not forgetting images; I am failing to visualize them in the first place
  4. 0 errors, 13c / 19.2":
  5. 0 errors, 52c / (1'26.4", 1'32", 1'43"): got up, took a huge cup of coffee, and decided to stop fooling around; 13c only were not giving me incentive to try hard; very decent result for a full deck with very good review and recall.

#25
  • Warming up just prior to practicing hasn’t been that useful, it takes time, it removes some of the pleasure of practice time, and with all that said, it increases the risk of skipping the daily practice in a busy day. That said, I’ll try to add “warm-ups” during the many little breaches of time that appear throughout the day and to practice without a previous warm-up. It’s going to be, say, more “realistic”. No warm-up at all today, though…

  • First pass in Memory League training: 52c [new MP, using physical deck, no review, immediately writing down cards on recall]

  • Result: 0 errors, 52c / (2’02", —, 2’41")

  • Second pass in Memory League training: 52c [new MP, using physical deck, no review, immediately writing down cards on recall]

  • Result: 0 errors, 52c / (2’04", —, 2’17")

  • Comment: Recall was pretty good, considering that it is way harder when you don’t see the remaining cards on the software; I think that’s good practice, but it slows you down to make sure you memorized all cards.

#26
  • No warm-up

  • First pass in Memory League training: 52c [old MP, using physical deck, no review, immediately writing down cards on recall]

  • Result: 3 errors, 52c / (1’30", —, 3’12"): I had begun memorizing the first 5 loci, got interrupted and started again; but that gave me ghosts that caused the errors;

  • Second pass in Memory League training: 52c [new MP, using physical deck, no review, immediately writing down cards on recall]

  • Result: failed attempt (interrupted)

  • Third pass in Memory League training: 52c [new MP, using physical deck, no review, immediately writing down cards on recall]

  • Result: failed attempt (pressed the reset button on the stopwatch right after memorizing)

  • Ridiculous day.

#27
  • Very little warm-up;

  • First pass in Memory League training: 52c [new MP]

  • Result: 4 errors, 52c / (1’33", —, 6’01"): tired, no concentration;

  • Second pass in Memory League training: 52c [new MP]

  • Result: 0 errors, 52c / (1’36.5", —, 4’): not certain about some images, lucky.

#28
  • First pass in Memory League training: 52c [new MP]
  • Result: 3 errors, 52c / (1’21.3", —, 4’)

#29
  • 5’ warm-up;

  • First pass in Memory League training: 4 * 13c [old MP]

  • Result:

  1. 0 errors, 13c / 15":
  2. 0 errors, 13c / 17.4":
  3. 0 errors, 13c / 14.8":
  4. 1 error, 13c / 15":
  • Second pass in Memory League training: 52c [new MP]

  • Result: Failed attempt.

  • Third pass in Memory League training: 52c [new MP]

  • Result: 0 errors, 52c / (1’14.2", 1’39", 1’48"): New PB! A bad phase, a failed attempt, and a new PB… go figure. But to mentally review the images before recalling is definitely a help. Moreover, the second half of my “new” MP is proving to be very good for recall, while my old MP has been very difficult to use with proficiency. This is the thousandth time I say that, but I need new MPs!

  • Comment: I must stop being lazy and resume a more serious dedication. I am close to my objective of reaching sub-1’; after that, I can take it easy and calmly consolidate my time below 1’ because I don’t have further aspirations with cards beyond that; then, I’ll be able to dedicate myself to numbers.

#30
  • 5’ warm-up;

  • First pass in Memory League training: 52c [old MP]

  • Result: Failed attempt.

  • Second pass in Memory League training: 52c [new MP]

  • Result: 0 errors, 52c / (1’38", --, 6’18"): physical deck

  • Third pass in Memory League training: 52c [new MP]

  • Result: 6 errors, 52c / (1’12", 3’12", 4’)

#31
  • I need to sleep; will do whatever I can…

  • First pass in Memory League training: 4 * 13c [old MP]

  • Result:

  1. 0 errors, 13c / 17":
  2. 0 errors, 13c / 19":
  3. 0 errors, 13c / 17":
  4. 1 error, 13c / 18":
  • Second pass in Memory League training: 4 * 13c [new MP]
  • Result:
  1. 1 error, 13c / 15.7":
  2. 0 errors, 13c / 17":
  3. 1 error, 13c / 16.4":
  4. 1 error, 13c / 15":
  • Third pass in Memory League training: 52c [new MP]
  • Result:
  1. 8 errors, 13c / 1'11.6":

#32
  • 5’ warm-up;

  • First pass in Memory League training: 52c [old MP]

  • Result: 0 errors, 52c / (1’37", 3’06", 3’17")

  • Second pass in Memory League training: 52c [new MP]

  • Result: 0 errors, 52c / (1’26", 2’09", 2’26")

  • Third pass in Memory League training: 52c [new MP]

  • Result: 0 errors, 52c / (1’13.36", 1’27", 1’42"): New PB! Even if by less than a second. What matters is that it was a good day, warming up and improving as I used my MPs up to the last one. I am pretty sure that as soon as I build and get to know a new MP I’ll get to the 1’ barrier. So, why I keep procrastinating that is a mystery…

  • Comments: I should point out that both my review and recall times were the best ever, which attests to the quality of the memorization. The reason was conspicuous today: I focused on actually visualizing the images instead of rationalizing them; I must trust the visuals. Moreover, I slept better last night.

#33
  1. 52c / 1'24" - failed
  2. 52c / 1'35" - 3 errors

  1. 0 errors, 13c / 15.3":
  2. 0 errors, 13c / 18.5":

  4. 5 errors, 13c / 13.5":
  • Second pass in Memory League training: 52c [new MP]

  • Result: Failed

  • Third pass in Memory League training: 52c [new MP]

  • Result: Failed

  • Too tired, no peace, shouldn’t have wasted my time

#35
  • 5 ’ Warm-up

  • First pass in Memory League training: 4 * 13c [old MP]

  • Result:

  1. 1 error, 13c / (15.7", 27", 1'27"): not really seeing many cards
  2. failed; no visualization or concentration whatsoever
  3. 0 errors, 13c / (19.2", 21", 24"):
  4. 0 errors, 13c / (16.9", 20", 24"):
  • Second pass in Memory League training: 4 * 13c [new MP]
  1. 0 errors, 13c / (16.3", 15", 20"):
  2. 0 errors, 13c / (16.3", 21", 1'13"):
  3. 0 errors, 13c / (16.5", 12", 26"):
  4. 1 error, 13c / (16.9", 30", 47"):
  • Third pass in Memory League training: 52c [new MP]

  • Result: 3 errors, 52c / (1’12.3", 1’45", 4’)

  • Comment: I need to actually visualize both loci and images; I am relying too much on thought/reason/natural memory instead of using the main precepts of the art: imagery and location.

#36
  • 5 ’ Warm-up

  • First pass in Memory League training: 52c [old MP]

  • Result: 5 errors, 52c / (1’25", 2’24", 2’50")

  • Third pass in Memory League training: 52c [new MP]

  • Result: 0 errors, 52c / (1’11.5", 1’47", 2’32"): This is what this run should have been; however, while recalling I skipped the fourth-to-last locus for whatever stupid reason and, instead of making sure the last four or five were correct, I began rearranging ALL cards, pulling them forward in the hope I’d find the one I skipped; pure stupidity; could have been a new PB.

  • Third pass in Memory League training: 52c [new MP]

  • Result: 0 errors, 52c / (1’13.7", 1’42", 2’12"):

  • Comment: This and the last two training days (as well as the next few will be) have been with my wife in the same room making all kinds of noises, so I consider these as very good runs; no doubt the intervening days without practice have had the beneficial effect of allowing images to stand out in memory unaffected by ghosts of any sort, compensating for any lack of concentration.
