Not sure what's the meaning of this sentence

Hello, I’m currently learning english and had trouble with interpreting this complex sentence: “I tried to appeal to (= ask for support based on) his sense of loyalty, stressing how good the company had been to him.”
I’m not sure what does appeal mean in this case. I supposed it was either help in general or money linking to the “good company” “I” I had been to “him”.
How would a native interpret this sentence or what is the closest thing you can relate this to.
Hope I’m making sense.

I’m a native speaker. To appeal to something in this case has the meaning of “to be attractive or interesting”.

I tried to appeal to (= make a reference to something he finds attractive, like one of his values) his sense of loyalty.
