Glad to be here on the Art of Memory Forum. I’m sure it will be an interesting and useful adventure in the realm of memory techniques.
Though I’m interested in as diverse applications as memorizing vocabulary in foreign languages, memorizing the fretboard of my guitar and more, I’d like to begin with a maybe unusual field: wines (plus beer and spirits).
As soon as the Covid epidemic is over, I’ll sit for my sommelier exam and would therefore like to make good use of the idle time learning all the required material, which includes heaps of wine names, properties (grapes, production techniques, etc.), geographical areas of origin and lots more.
Could anybody help me in finding the most appropriate/efficient technique for such an endeavour? I don’t have much experience in memory techniques, apart from flashcards for foreign languages words and expressions.
But in this case there’s much more than just pairs of words to remember. It’s more like developing and memorizing an ongoing mental database with several “rows” and “columns”, and lots of possible links between different sets of information.
Who knows, maybe I’m not the first to ask for help in this specific field, and someone might already know what works best.
I hope this request can also help other wine lovers now and in the future. There’s a lot of us, and LOTS to learn and memorize!
Thanks a lot for your help and see you soon on the forum!
