I think I’ve seen YouTube videos of Yanjaa Wintersoul describing just why Mongolia is so strong in memory competitions. (She herself is an outstanding, popular example.) They have definitely built a strong legacy of achievement in international memory events.

The Mongolians, with just a nation of 3 million people, deserve all the accolades that they get in memory.
Of course they usually get so many medals
But they also send a huge amount of people to the memory competitions
It all started about 15 years ago with the memory school of the lawyer Mr. Khandsuren in the capital Ulan Batar.
But now they have huge connections within their school system and they train the brightest students to be mnemonists.
And now they have many more memory schools.
Besides that, Mongolians, in the past centuries as a mainly nomadic nation of many tribes,
due to their very frequent changing of locations, they always had a scarce and limited amount of books and written word, carrying around.
Thus they had relied heavily on memorizing tales, speeches and oral rules, and promoting heavily the use of many such techniques
They have set an intellectual example that many Western nations should follow.
