The other day a curious thought popped into my head, so I thought I would share it.
In this day and age, artificial intelligence is getting trickier and trickier. Probably most of you have heard of deep fake images and videos of people that are so completely realistic it is almost impossible to tell they are not actual photos or videos of people. We are not talking photo-shopped images, but images that are generated by AI software. It’s both fascinating and scary as hell, because it is getting harder and harder to know what is real.
At the same time as AI is mastering the art of visual deception, it is also producing human like speech on a scale of authenticity that was once regarded as impossible. A year or so ago, one of the big companies (was it Google?or IBM?) did a demo where a bot phoned a hair salon, spoke to the person at the salon to make an appointment, while producing these funny little vocalizations that only humans do–like the ums, or mm-hmm sounds that you would only expect from a real person. Anyway, the bot sounded so completely authentic that it would have been almost impossible for the salon person to realize the caller was not human.
I got wondering if it is possible that somebody could build a bot that would join a website like this as a member and interact with us, ask questions, suggest things, etc, such that it doesn’t occur to us to even wonder.
You don’t have to take this seriously, but I thought it was an interesting think to pontificate about. It certainly seems plausible that it could happen. Technology is probably far enough along to achieve that goal, given what it can do with visual and speech deep fakes.
