Lol, thanks @simon thats a much easier way. Never even crossed my mind to do it like that. Im gonna finish memorising the first 10K digits of pi with my current system, and then once thats done i’ll start work on the 4 digit system

A little update on how I’m doing with pi memorization. Right now, I know 5895 digits, and I just finished to fill my 13th zone (each zone is 180 digits) with stories in my imaginary mental palace. It’s getting harder and harder, the need to recall is slowly but surely increasing. But also, I feel like I didn’t learn and visualize the mental palace enough before placing the stories in it. And that, added to the fact that some close loci are badly designed and too similar to each other, makes the recall a bit harder and longer. Also, from now I won’t learn more than 450 digits a week (which I’ve been doing regularly since a few weeks). But I’m confident, and I should hit 10k just before Christmas. Don’t know if I’ll wait pi day to attempt a national record (France, Sylvain Estadieu, 4681 digits), or if I’ll do it during Christmas holidays : )

There may be a way to be more efficient with the creation and design of imaginary palaces. Maybe find a special and unique atmosphere/identity for each section, get inspired by architectural/urban photos, maybe create loci more intuitively in order to create the MP faster… Do you have any ideas on how that could be done ? I’m always hungry for suggestions, and I’ll probably investigate that in the future. I feel like my experience with my current imaginary palace was very enriching and surprising in certain ways, and I don’t regret it.

I stopped learning digits with my 4-digit system (from 10k onwards), I only know 300 digits with that technique. Just checked, I did 3 mistakes (5 digits wrong), and all in the last 4 locis, although I didn’t recall it for at least 2 weeks. So it’s sticking quite good, and I (once again) can’t wait to be able to memorize that way, and to fill up my number system.

I created my 4th MP, which is 317 loci on some video game’s maps (TrackMania NF, maps E03, E04, E05 plus the Trackmania stadium, digits 7156 to 10008). I continued to create my 5th MP, which is a walk in my hometown, up to 18k digits. I guess that I could go to around 30k digits in that MP, so that’s at least one more year of work. Probably closer to two.

Take care !

Nice job man, its great to see your progress. And good luck with the national record. I finished memorising the 10,600 digits today. About a week slower than I had planned, but I am glad to have done it in the end. I will probably review them every day for a couple of weeks to make sure I have all the images 100% perfect and also practise verbally reciting them before I attempt the record.

Already 12 days without update ? time flies.

6615 digits known today, learning has been a bit easier recently despite the usual winter sickness. In about a week, my imaginary MP will be full of images. I verbally recited the first 2000 digits of pi, I made 3 mistakes in the first 1000. In my defense, I created the stories back when I was a “beginner” in memory stuff, so they were a bit messy at times, and I didn’t recall them for a long time. Anyways, now I know them better, that’s the whole point.

My mother wants to learn some poems, I told her that a mental palace was maybe a good idea to be more efficient but for some reason, she’s quite reluctant to it. I think I’m gonna learn them at the same time as her, one per week, placing each of them in a Trackmania Nations Forever map (which is very convenient because the average TMNF map is perfectly sized for an average poem, and I almost-perfectly know 60 of them). I never learned verbal stuff with memory techniques, I’ll see how it goes. The poems and songs I rote-learned in the past, I forgot them all, so I hope it’ll stick better with MPs : ) it should, I’m comfident.

Also, I just realized, a few weeks/months ago I planned to learn the square roots of numbers 21 and below, with 21 digits precision, and I learned a couple only. Along with e and phi. I should complete that one day.

About the “more intuitive way to learn digits”, about which I made a post earlier, I’m almost certain I will try it seriously in 2022, maybe around digit 20k or so. But I’m determined, today I learned the string “98 98 98 9” without taking advantage of it (xxx xxx 398, next loci 989 893 xxx), it’s too bad.

I know 7335 digits, finished my 3rd memory palace. I’ve been doing quite a lot of reviews the last few days, some images (between 5 and 10 in total) were incomplete or wrong, so I consider it’s a quite good ratio overall. Obviously, I make sure to learn them even better than the other ones. It’s often a single image among the 3 that I forget or get wrong, I’ve never had a compete memory hole on a whole loci. 6 weeks until the 10k barrier !

I also began to learn the squares, I know them moderetely well up to 40. I’d like to know them by heart up to 100, that’d be cool. I also learned a poem, and soon a song I love. Oh, and also the quare roots of 6 and 7, slowly making my way up to my goal, which is 21. These are some little things besides the big pi project that keep me exercising slightly different things.

It’s still a pleasure to learn, remember and review things, I love it. I started in July or so, now I know 7k+ pi digits, I have a solid number system, worked on an even bigger one, I know how to efficiently create memory palaces, images, stories, they stick in my head way waaay easier and faster, I can long-term remember phone numbers in 20 seconds, all that in a few months worth of practise… With that pace, in a year from now I know 20k+ pi digits, a beginning of a 4-digit system, learned 50 poems and songs, all the squares up to 100, and probably even more things, … it’s fast. I’m surprising myself and I’m very glad about how I changed myself. I’ll continue on this way.

Hey ! It’s been a while, back from a little pause from memory stuff. I learned the first 10k digits, even a little bit more, but didn’t recall them since a while, although this will take a few weeks at most when I finally decide to do that.

20 days ago, I decided to learn some digits in a completely different way, more intuitively and with more freedom overall. I made a post about this earlier ad I’m glad to have finally set this up. I grouped the digits 50 001 to 51 000 in 20 groups of 50 digits and learned one group a day, until today. I also reviewed them rigorously with the help of a spaced repetition schedule (1 to 3 recalls on day 0, recalls day 1, 3, 7, 15, 30, 3 months later) that I will probably keep in the future since it works quite well until now. I get most of the digits right, but I still forget strings or make mistakes, which is an occasion to re-learn them more seriously, which, I think, is a good thing.

Each of the 50-digit story is using the full potential of repetitions, similarities, symmetries, mathematical sequences and any pattern that I could think of. I begin with finding those patterns and grouping the digits accordingly. For example, the digits I learned today are grouped like that, more or less:

275-77-6-22-535-10-40-90-2392-888-77-9-4246-3-048-3-28-03-1913-27-10-49

I use images from my millenium from time to time, or from other systems I created. Otherwise, I use images that come naturally to my mind when I see the strings of numbers. For example here, 9 represents someone running fast (because 9 is big), 4246 is him jumping on a trampoline (4 being the initial jump, quite high, 2 when he hits the trampoline because it’s a lower point, 46 when he’s taking more and more height in the air), 3 is him hitting the ground and walking (9 is running here, so the square root of 9 is just walking), 048 is him taking momentum from the ground (0) and jumping very high (48), and 3 is him walking again. After, he’s in front of some pharmacy sign showing the date (28th of march 1913), the temperature (27°C) and the time of day (10:49). All that mess seems to be quite complicated, even to me when I’m explaining it here, but since it all makes sense, it’s not that long of a story, it’s not taking way too much information space into my brain.

All the pieces of the 50-digit story are linked together, and I only need the start of the story to get going till the end, so I placed the first image of each story on a 20-loci memory palace. There’s probably a way to get rid of it though. This is just a test, over a single month, but it appears to stick quite well in my memory. It’s a bit long to find the patterns and encode, but overall it’s quite fast and easy to learn. I’m glad I did it and I’m questioning the fact that I’ll learn digits with my 4-digit-system after all. I’ll see if I do another thousand next month, I’ll make my choice the first of august (in which case I will start to go backwards and learn digits 49 001 to 50 000, because it’s already quite far in the deepness of pi. lul.)
