This is interesting, chug coffee then take a 20-minute nap right before you need to be at your peak performance level.

This is funny. I actually do this AFTER training. I saw a study on rats, the group given the caffeine after they ran the maze ran it faster the next time versus 1) rats given caffeine before running the maze and 2) control. And another study on humans called something like Wakeful Rest Boosts Memory, showing rest (awake, but relaxed: default state) immediately following learning increased recall even when the memory was not recalled until a week after learning. So I often put them together. World Champ in the making.

What we can learn from this is that you should be ingesting caffeine ALL THE TIME.

I do wonder how long you can keep it up before you run into a physical problem. Surely there is a reason that your brain receptors are blocked by adenosine, and keeping them unblocked for an extended time can’t be completely healthy.

I also wonder about the after affects. If you used coffee naps to stay alert for an extra 12 hours one day, will you have a crash and take an extra day to recover? I have to think this is something you could use for a specific event like a memory competition or college exams, but not something you can do regularly without consequences.

I really like powernaps (10-40 minutes). I haven’t tried the caffeine trick, because I think that the effect would probably kick in before I finish the coffee. 🙂

In the past i saw in my university a work of some images of brain damage from coffee ingestion over the life.
permanent brain damage. it is just like wine it can have bennefits but if you are not controlled enough or have low self steem it can be harmfull

The thing with coffee naps is; they work on the fact that coffee takes ‘some time’ before it reaches the bloodstream. Tim Ferris also discussed this, he used caffeinated gum. So you quickly drink your coffee, chew gum, then try to fall asleep, ideally within 5-10 minutes. Then after sleeping for 10-25 minutes, you wake up slightly more refreshed because of the nap, and also because of the caffeine.

If you don’t fall asleep in the ~20-30 minutes before the coffee kicks in, you will find it extremely hard to fall asleep. Tim also spoke of using it for ‘extremely vivid dreams’, if you chewed gum when falling asleep. Never tried it because I have a hard enough time falling asleep as it is.

“I also wonder about the after affects. If you used coffee naps to stay alert for an extra 12 hours one day, will you have a crash and take an extra day to recover?”
Caffeine has a halflife of 6-8 hours(if I remember correctly), even taking it 5+ hours before sleep has a negative effect on the sleep. It’s more of a one time a day thing, in the afternoon slump.

Taijutsu; Ingestion of too much of anything is harmful, all that really matters is the dose. Too much water will kill you.

To try this, I would probably have to cut back caffeine consumption to \<50mg a day. Right now, it barely has any effect. I once knew a guy who would drink coffee like water though; said it had no effect on him, he just liked the taste. We would be hanging out at 11pm and he would order a coffee, then go to sleep at 12pm with no problem. It probably did have a negative effect on his sleep, it just wasn’t noticeable.

Coffee in excess cause brain damage… i saw by mistake (i was searching another thing) a lot of material about it in my university. i saw pictures of brains with micro damages and as time goes by it would increase in and intensity. I like coffee but i dont take it all the time.
I think in this very same way you do: I discover a research that shows improvment doing something i allready know it is not very healthy and i will take a wrong conclusion and accept very well this kind of information.

just take care!!

\*\*i guess you are doing the same as me, you found a way to enter internet only at some times of the day.

what i learn here is nice but entering this foruns take a huge time. As i have no focus and concentration i must enter here only at some moments of the day,. and maybe not every day. Chinese do that. They have facebook and other softwares bloked over there i guess google is blocked on most part of China and they have something simmilar. 4:30 AM i took a lot of hours and days to do almost nothing and it is happening a lot of times because of internet. it is not memory sports 🙂
